The fact that you use "didn't play too badly" as some sort of praise say's it all.

I know it’s been running joke for years, but I really think we have to question the training pitches and how heavy they are for adding to players fatigue. Before speedy “left” he was very vocal about them.

which proves this uche was ill is absolute nonsense! He was just frozen out of the matchday squad then ends up coming on at half time through sheer desperation! Shambles mate
