You are right. They do play four at the back as well.

I apologise.

Not a problem. I probably wouldn’t advocate that we play quite as flexibly as City do given the difference in personnel and where City often go from 3 to 4 and back again during games.

However, most of our side will undoubtedly have extensive experience of playing with a back 4. It therefore shouldn’t be that hard for them to move between a 3 and 4 to suit player availability and better matching the opposition.

One of the more frustrating elements of the past couple of seasons is that we have very much become one trick ponies - we play the same system come hell or high water. It was always one of Rudge’s big strengths imo - his ability to change his system to best utilise his resources.

Lowe has played some games at centrehalf in the Premier League and quite a few in The Championship.  He's a little more experienced in the position than just makeshift.

If he was as good at CB with that experience he would be in team. He’s predominantly a CM

When he's been most successful it's been as a holding midfield player in a 3. Problem for him in our team, we don't play with a midfield 3. He's never done really well as part of a central midfield 2. He's also had at least one season as a rightback.

The opposite of everything you've said here is true fella.

Don't worry though, it's not all that matters, that's what we need to tell ourselves. I went to the chipper for dinner today, that was great and made me happy.

Have a good weekend.

If we can get close to our best side out, what I consider it to be anyway, we just might surprise a few and get something. We've had a really poor last week or so and things could quickly fall very flat if we're not careful. There's ways to lose games so hopefully we at least don't get drubbed.

Ripley

Clark

Cass

Smith

Iacovitti

Grant

Ojo

Arblaster

Chislett

Garrity

Wilson

Subs: Leutweiler, Jones, Sang, Lowe, Plant, Thomas, Ikpeazu

I know that. That's why I said close to. If we could put out the team I listed I think we would be in with a fair chance against anybody in the league. But hopefully at least having Chislett and Clark back tomorrow will make a significant difference.

Just setting off. Don't mind any result as long as we are competitive and not scared of our opponents.

Cheltenham got a draw here so Pompey are fallable.

The Yak a big loss. Think I'm right in saying that the 2 league games he hasn't started we've conceded 10. Barnsley and Bristol Rovers.

Went to Rovers on Tuesday and had to suffer Massey, I’m in Southampton now ready for todays game, if I have to suffer at the most 30 minutes of Massey again I will be very cheesed off.

Uche won't be playing straight off,he's not match fit so I think it'll be Wilson or garrity up top, I'll happily take a 0-0 draw and stop the rot today 😁... UTV... VTID

Cass Balmer Smith

Clark Blaster Ojo Grant

Garrity Chislett

Uche

Unfit Uche > our other options.

I'm not sure if it's just me but (apart from Sutton) I haven't really noticed Balmer be as poor as some are making out. He seems like a fairly steady plodding CB.

All defenders make errors. I'm not sure if Balmer is making more than average or if he's on an unfortunate run of every error leading to a goal. He is getting rolled to often by centreforwards at the moment and he's also been caught out a couple of times trying to get infront of his man and not winning the ball. He looks OK for most of each game .... until he gets something wrong.

If we are going to get anything out of this game and subsequent games we need to inject some pace into the team. For this reason I think it is vital that we make more use of Josh Thomas. It was noticeable on Tuesday night at Rovers how ineffective we were as an attacking force in comparison to them. Up to the sending off we had more of the ball than them and did more attacking all down our right wing targeting the left back. But although we were able to work opportunities to get crosses into the box the build up was so laboured that Rovers had  loads of defensive cover when the cross came in with the exception of the chance that fell to Garrity. Whereas when Rovers attacked they did so at pace and looked far more dangerous. Their first half goals came from well delivered early crosses into an uncongested penalty area where the scorer had space to atta k the cross and finish decisively. Second half Rovers slowed it down because they had the comfort of a 2 goal cushion  and an extra man so didn't look as threatening, their goal coming from a 25 yard worldie.
