Play Howkins with Smith next weekend in a back 4 along with Gibbo and Clarke but feel for Crooks who is a decent player

 

My back four would be Gibbons....Howkins....Crookes....Clark a midfield 3 with Manny in it and a front 3 of Elliott,Pope and Harris

To be honest based on his form over the last few weeks I think Clark needs a rest, isn’t Crookes also a left back, maybe play him there and Legge or Smith alongside Howkins?

 

Elliott was a strange omission yesterday given his pace and I’d say your front three is more than worth a try.

 

We also need far more energy in midfield so a trio of Manny, Conlon or Joyce sitting and one of either Edser and Whelan must be worth a try.

 

I know Askey said they don’t have much football league experience but our senior pros have stacks of games under their belt and aside from Brown are in abysmal form.

Clark would be better playing as a left back not a wing back, as would Gibbons on the right. Round pegs round holes, flat back four as a starting point.

I’m very disappointed after today - I sincerely thought that Askey would bring something different.

 

I feel much the same but it's a bit premature after four days in charge. Take a look at our opponents yesterday. After four games in charge Calderwood had a run of one win and three defeats, including a six nil mauling at MK Dons. The Cambridge fans I know were telling me they were dead and buried. Now, they've won four out of five. Despite our eternal pessimism, things change quickly in football.

We're not seemingly happy to try younger loan players because we're in a relegation fight. So question #1 Why have we signed them? Question #2 Why do we keep sending Dior Angus out on loan only to watch him score goals for every club he's been loaned to,(another goal yesterday!) yet not be prepared to play him in a Vale shirt? God knows, we've only scored 27 goals in 32 games and Dior has been banging them home for all the other clubs he's been out to--mind boggling or what?!!!!!!!!!!!!!
