Our season reviewed in stats

Here's one for the stat fiends amongst us (well I found it an interesting website!)

https://experimental361.com/2018/05/06/scatter-graphics-league-2-2017-18/

This website has looked at the stats of all teams in English football and made graphs. It makes more sense when you read the definitions of everything on the site. According to the League 2 graphs we had:

Shot Dominance - quiet attack/quiet defence

Attacking Dominance - ineffectual

Defensive Dominance - avoided the issue

Expected goals - worse attack better decence

And to summarise: ”I hope Port Vale matches are more exciting than this chart makes them look"...yeah that nails it

At least we're not in the worst quartile and share the one we're in with Lincoln & Notts Co. who both did well.

One thing you have to note from this though is some people have far too much spare time on their hands if this is what they do once Jeremy Kyle, Loose Women and Bargain Hunt have gone off.

Spot on we are exciting as working all your life doing manual work then realising that you wished you listened at school as your body after 45 tells you please No more .

Must do better

Lowest shots per goal conceded. Third lowest (Lowest discounting last game I think) chances per game conceded.

My view all season is we would have been mid table with a decent keeper. Tends to support the view we have been pretty decent at the back discounting the goal keeping issues.

Correct and under Aspin we finished 17th based on the games we played from the beginning of October. When you think of the shambles we had to put up with in goal and the defensive changes we went through, the bloke worked a minor miracle. Couple of bad defeats but the rest, as the Experimental site shows, was pretty boring. We're probably a handful of good signings away from being a competitive side, so let's hope Rudgie and Aspo can get the signings they want. We live in hope.

Totally agree. I think we adopted a pretty conservative style of play, largely based on what we had available.

Hoping that we have better players so we can play a more entertaining style next season.

And the pint is half full.

I love your optimistic view on these stats.

The "Defensive Effectiveness" graph stands out most for me. The "Shots Faced per Goal Conceded" bears out what we saw time and time again in that a shot on the Vale goal often resulted in conceding a goal. Points out a priority where we need to strengthen, a quality goalkeeper and defenders.
