whilst replying to tt, another thought popped up, if in the future after finally leaving the eu, Scotland voted for independence and applied to join the eu, would they then have to sort out  a border with the uk?

Most definitely..... and probably a hard boarder with any luck plus it's own currency ..... would they need a passport of their own too? Or just proof of release (tongue firmly in cheek)..? It would save the UK government a tidy sum.

Although the political atmosphere  has shifted the backstop hasn't but none of the political parties have offered an alternative until recently,  whether that has credibility is a seperate question. The backstop still has the same consequences the politicians rejected 3 times.

Parliament has a great propensity to say what it doesn't want but little appetite to offer what it does want or alternatives. Although when given the opportunity they defeated their own proposals.

I doubt the backstop was inserted for the UKs benefit.

The national interest doesn't come into the equation for Labour,the Lib Dems and the SNP.

The EU does not want a hard boarder, the UK  does not want a hard boarder. It's possible any solution offered would be rejected if it cuts off the money stream from the UK to the EU, which is part of the problem, if it cuts off NI from the UK or if it contravenes the GF agreement.

It makes me wonder if the GF agreement would have been an agreement if we were not in the EU when it was agreed.

The onus is therefore on both parties to find a solution if they want to make it workable.

I wonder how quickly an agrèment could be reached if both sides said brexit is suspended and all monies from the UK to the EU will cease until a solution is found...... it won't happen because the UK  could sit back for another 3 years and simply reject any proposals offered.

It seems the £3.2billion bale out we gave to Ireland in 2010 counted for nothing then?

At least they are trying to get this thing done once and for all,Labour,the Lib Dems and the SNP are doing everything they can to stop it.

Listening to our early edition of the BBC News an OxBridge civil servant was giving a 'definitive hard border response' plus the effects it will have on 'Chunnel activities.

Sir Humphry Appleby would have been very proud.

Sadly, I remain non the wiser re. the Border issue.
