Not sure if this has been said but lets end the johnjeffersfanclub thing right here...Rudge was the manager of a team who played the best football i have seen as a Vale fan, masterminded a few promotions,a few giant killing cup runs including beating the FA Cup holders at the time, spent some money but made the club a lot more, gave us the pleasure of being the top potteries side and having the upper hand in our games against stoke on many occasions,3 wembley appearances, playing in the Championship for most of the 90's,taking us to our highest ever league position and only just missing out on the play offs to get into the Premier League,i have more than likely missed a couple of things but SIR JOHN RUDGE is a port vale LEGEND and always will be,so please do us all a favour and just **** off

But he turned down the job at Bradford City as well as the chance to manage Stoke, maybe others we never heard of. What you do after you have been sacked is a different matter.

Unbelieveable thread.

If you look at the history of any sporting club there is usually a percieved period of success followed by many years of non-success. These periods often coincide with a particular person being at the club - be it player or manager or both. I'm thinking Dalgliesh and Shearer for Blackburn. Howard Wilkinson and Gordon Strachan at Leeds.

Well in Vale's history there has really only been two truly outstanding periods. The early mid 50s and the entire time John Rudge was manager. I'd argue Rudge's tenure was the greatest in all of Vale's history and you could also argue the player at the top of everything was Andy Jones. Rudge may not have had the highest win ratio (I believe MA has that honour) but foR about 10 years Vale and being a Vale fan was brilliant. Not every season was brilliant. The immediate post Beckford/Earle season was pretty low but what a way to bounce back in the following years.

Now for today, I'd take his advice at a heartbeat. Not taking it would seem pretty stupid. I wouldnt employ him (as maanger), he's 72 - I think its better to leave legends in the mist where they belong.

Lets just focus on the facts

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Port_Vale_F.C._managers

Twice as many matches as any other manager. Four times as many honours as any other manager. Plus another honour when he was assistant to John McGrath when promotion was achieved.

Would be nice if a statue was built whilst he is still alive.

Totally agree. And if not a traditional statue then Rename the Bycars the John Rudge stand with a giant flat cap sat on top.

Surely rudges eye for a good player won't have disappeared. No matter how old. Especially if the manager tells him what type of player he wants. I think having people like him and MA around the club is a good thing.

Especially as smurf has, by his own admission made poor decisions.

That's what I am thinking probably the best decision he would have made since taking over. Someone coming in with contacts and knowledge would be vital.

My greatest footballing memories are down to the legend that is John Rudge. Port Vale should have paid homage to him years ago. I sit in the Bycars and it would be a privilege and honour for the true Vale End to be named after him. It should be done now and get Rudgie down to see it. The ground would be packed to the rafters, the club and supporters would be uplifted and it's the least he deserves. Long live Sir John.

Maybe somebody puts that to our esteemed owner whilst he is in the mood to place the fans?? Robf maybe an editorial piece?

I don't understand why there is no campaign to honour John Rudge. Give him a job even if its to work along side Micky back room and firstly name a stand after him secondly build a statue outside the stadium.
