So , john jeffers, is this a personal thing ?

Because in 1996 I received a letter from a very nice lady involved with Port Vale. She described John Rudge as a gentleman, and a pleasure to work with, and he was even the best man at a family member's wedding. Later , she told me that she was very sad to see him leave the club. That is first hand information , and I'm going with that in describing a great manager if the club. The one who plotted the downfall of no less than Spurs in that great Sat. afternoon in 1988. No mean feat all , with a side nit exactly brimming with stars. Your personal opinion I respect, but I disagree about his ability to manage.

Up to a point, I suppose my personal experience has influenced my view of the man, yes. In many ways I resent the status Rudge has among fans, because I just don't believe he was the architect of it all. Bill Bell, though as bent as a nine Bob note, gave Rudge a platform when many would not. And Ray William's role is drastically under played.

I loved watching some of those 1990s sides. There's no doubt about it. And I guess Rudge was a big part of that, but he wasn't the Messiah. Not Sir John.

I don't know what's got into me this evening, because I'm not usually confrontational, but this is a topic that often gets my goat. I was very close to the club at the time and maybe my view of JR is forever tainted.

In any case, looking to the past is pointless. And that's what annoys me about today's Vale fans. The games changed. The dynamic of being in the lower leagues is so different. And so many of our problems have come from nostalgia. Rudge is the past (whatever your opinion). We need to survive in today's football.

I think it's more that Rudges wheeling and dealing gave bell the platform to be seen as our greatest chairman. Bell didn't bank roll us. Rudge bank rolled bell. How did he do after rudge was sacked?

Well, if he wasn't the Messiah, he must have been a very naughty boy. And yes, we were watching the same football, and it was scintillating, and got me on the edge of my seat more than any other Vale team I have supported before or since. I just think it is curmudgeonly not to recognise that Rudge was the driving force. Yes, Bell opened the biscuit tin, and yes, Ray Williams could scout a player too - but Rudge did so much to lift this club, and his nous would be welcome now. Would it kill us to ask him to lend a hand now and again? Have we got better options on the table?

Cracking Life of Brian reference. I prefer 'biggus dickus' though, surely one for spunk trumpet.

Looking to the past may be pointless, but rewriting it as a load of vindictive rubbish and posting this absolute inane dross is unforgiveable.

There is no need to refute your points, everyone who has been a Vale fan for any time will know they are ridiculous - just tell us how much Rudge spent and how much he got in transfer fees - then try telling people Bell was the hero. Bell was the luckiest chairman ever, and if you check - he did NOT appoint Rudge, he inherited a gem undeservedly.
