Views needed: Ultimate right-back contenders

A REMINDER - THIS THREAD IS ASKING FOR CONTENDERS FOR THE SHORT-LIST IT IS NOT THE VOTE ITSELF. THAT WILL APPEAR LATER...

Ok, so a fair few contenders from recent years, so again I would be particularly interested in players from before my time.

My personal short-list is:

Stan Turner - 1954 right-back, local lad, FA Cup semi-finalist, part of record-breaking team

Simon Mills - He's got no hair etc... cultured full-back of the Rudge era and huge fans favourite

Alan Webb - Mr Consistent. RB was favoured position but played anywhere in defence and never let you down

Andy Hill - a veteran when he signed but played a part in Rudge's glory era

Colin Tartt - barn-storming RB who took no prisoners...

So any more? I guess in the more recent era there's Adam Yates who seemed to massively divide opinion, but are there any other obvious ones I have missed or any errors in my shortlist?

Once I've had some thoughts and comments then the actual article and vote will appear later - so remember, this isn't the vote, it's just asking for names for the shortlist!

Cheers,

Rob

Where do we put Neil Aspin?

I think of him more as a right back than a centre half but I know he played a lot with Dean Glover in central defence too.

He was a centre half who could play right back, the vast majority of the games he played were at CB.

Simon Mills for me.

Still think I'd put Aspin there myself because as we said about Sproson there are more contenders for the centre back position and though Aspin played there with Glover I always preferred him on the right and Swanny with Glover in the middle.

If Neil Aspin is to be judged, it should be at centre half; I'd also add that for me, he is the singly best player to ever pull on a Port Vale shirt.

These threads are a bit of light relief and interesting to reflect on the past. But if Aspin goes on the centre half list he won't get picked by me as I don't think he is among our best two centre halves, let alone best player ever. Sproson - both of them - Glover, Cheadle, Gardner, Walsh, Hazell, Swan, Nicholson, etc. Plenty more I've missed out too.

That's the problem.
