Labour MP Tristram Hunt Resigns

This has to be good news for the local political setup. Now all we need is for Ruth Smeeth and that other idiot in Stoke South Rob Flello to resign. Another Labour parasite whom cares nothing for the people they purport to represent, he is going to work for a southern company in an executive role. Shows how passionate HE was for Stoke on Trent people.

I dare say that the parachuted London candidate Ruth Smeeth is not exactly pro Stoke on Trent either and time will tell to reveal that fact in time. Let's hope there is a by-election with a strong UKIP candidate and that the EU referendum voters can again come out in force and protest against the delay in activating Article 50 and therefore vote for a strong UKIP candidate.

Tristram Hunt never bothered showing his face hardly in the local area..instead opting to do a 'Alan Hudson' and promote himself in a newspaper article instead. The Labour label is definitely coming off thoughts anyone?:shifty:

This is a massive opportunity for JC to show some leadership.

Choose a proper candidate who will represent the people and fight a strong campaign and get a convincing victory..be part of the campaign, Use it to push Labour's policies, to get at the govt, to galvanise the locals. Come close to losing this one (or heaven forbid actually lose it, UKIP have a chance) and Labour might as well give up. Anyone who wants a strong opposition will want JC to step up on this.

Tristram Hunt will probably do a great job at the V&A but should never have been Labour's candidate..no connections with the area, wasn't really bothered about SoT and IMO didn't believe in what Labour was saying..he just wanted to be an MP.

My Mum wrote to him relating to an issue in Hartshill(where she's from originally) a few years ago and he actually rang up and spoke to her personally about it(although we no longer live in the area but my great aunt has lived in Hartshill most of her life) and escalated a process that has helped to sort it in the long run.

I can't really comment on what he does generally for the area though not living in Stoke but and I do agree with JA, not having someone who is a local person is never going to appeal to some!

Are you suggesting that he has been a success as leader of her majesty's opposition?

Well he's been an MP for something like 30+ years and so keeps getting elected which suggests he's done OK as an MP or at least the electorate are happy with him.

However, as an MP I believe he is more of a campaigner than a leader...and probably a very good campaigner. I've not seen much if any any evidence of success as a leader..he has an opportunity now and I hope that as opposition leader he takes advantage of it as we need a strong opposition and opposition leader.

I never really understood how S-O-T could contemplate electing someone in the first place with the name Tristram--hardly working class antecedents don't you think? Clearly a true socialist--he has now shown his real colours!

How on earth can you judge someone's socialist credentials by his name?? On that basis Anthony Wedgwood Benn, Lord Stansgate, should never have been allowed anywhere near the Labour Party.

It seems that unless you were born in a cardboard box on the streets in Hanley and are called Albert, you have no right to represent the people of Stoke.

Don't forget must have worked down the pit for 30 years first.

I had one dealing with Tristram Hunt and he was very good at helping me out, responding quickly and keeping in touch to find out my progress.

As a staunch Torie voter its rare i big up labour at all, however when I was made redundant a few years back the job centre were awful and had my job seekers allowance tied up in bags of red tape and i was struggling . Tristam was absolutely great, he contacted me via email and sent me a copy of a letter he had sent to the job centre. within 3-4 days all the red tape had been sorted along with back payment. The guy was great and I think he gets some stick for not from being a local and not the credit deserved. Just on this thread theres 3-4 people directly affected by him and Im not 100% sure other areas could say the same. Im sure in the current Labour muddle he will be sorely missed

Social background doesn't define political belief as quite a few have already pointed out. Tristram did not choose his name or his background but no doubt did choose his politics, which may well have been socially difficult for someone of his background so all the more credit to him.

Personally I find him a little too 'centre ground' and very much in the Blairite mould but give me Tristram and his politics any day of the week over the pseudo-patriotic self interested Tories who, for some bizzare reason, gain support from some members of the working and lower middle classes who are invariably worse off under Tory rule. No one ever questions why they should be excluded from being Tories because of their class background.
