Dont blame the bloke at all his only excitement came when it was announced Pizza Express were coming to Hanley doesn't that show you the state of Stoke on Trent.

Often wondered how the locals would have reacted if Tristam had been a Conservative, which ever seat he held, he would have been slaughtered due to his back ground, name and accent, unfairly in my view, the donkeys on Blackpool beach will be revving up for the by election Stoke never fails to elect whoever has the Labour nomination.

When I first moved to Stoke in the 70s each of the three constituencies had Labour majorities around 15,000. We also had a Council which at one point was made of 60 out of 60 labour Councillors. At the last election, Hunt's majority was just over 5,000. The outcome could depend very much on the selection of candidates by all the parties.

People can use their intellect, education, relationships, knowledge etc to overcome a lack of experience.[/color]

Intellect can be classed as something derived from experience as can Knowledge as both these prequisites can also promote common sense...something that these Champagne socialists that you try to promote have failed to do with their irresponsible attitude towards the working classes and not understanding the costs of unlimited immigration

Council Leader Mohammed Perez is thinking of putting his hat in the ring.

Former council leader.

Did anyone watch that programme about a year at the council offices in Stoke when Pervez was the leader? I ended up feeling really sorry for the bloke and thinking what a thankless task he'd got. Stoke-on-Trent City Council could do things a lot better than it does but it really is up against it in the face of just about every economic and social problem being worse here than virtually anywhere. Stoke should be twinned with Detroit!

Hi Carl. In your own words can you tell me what a champagne socialist is? Or just a socialist would do. Try to not peek at the Britain first website if you can

Also how can you comment on Tristram? Have you had any dealings with him or doesn't that rule apply to you?

If anyone thinks our Nige was such a man of the people when he was Ukip leader, they may well have their illusions shattered by a bit of online research.

And I can heartily recommend Private Eye as a fortnightly insight into the shenanigans of all the parties.

Having said that, too much cynicism towards our politicians ultimately does none of us any favours. There are, and have been, some exceptional, selfless MPs and councillors, in it for all the right reasons and in 43 years as a journalist I met many in that mould. Jo Cox epitomised that example of public service.

So I will judge Tristram Hunt on the testimonies of those in this thread who have had personal experience of the man and the help he gave them in times of need. And thanks, Jacko and Johnny Aitch for your pertinent comments.

So I shouldn't do anything to help those suffering famine in Africa because I'm not hungry? We shouldn't have done anything to help the victims of the Sri Lankan tsunami because our houses are dry? Do you really believe this? Do you really have to suffer an issue to understand it? If you really think that you should never comment again on anything to do with Vale because you haven't played for, managed or owned the club!!

But living in the real world what do you think has been happening in the UK in the past few years? You are one example...Just One, why people within the Labour party fail to 'get' why many people are in complete and utter anger and dismay.

In 2004 the Labour party sent search parties to get immigrants in (starting a seemingly innocent crusade to fill jobs that were not filled) Immigration was low at that time as the EU flood had not occurred but why send out search parties? Why not do what the Tories are doing and make it hard for people to stay on benefits then get a job?

The reason ws the long term strategy that would lead to thousands of British people being pushed into the margins. Wages would decrease because employers would take advantage of cheap Labour where workers from third world countries would work for next to nothing. Eventually this would lead to the Housing market increasing rents and the cost of mortgages increasing...meaning loads of people not able to access the housing ladder on low wages (Not everyone could afford or had the chance to stay in full time higher education EG University)

Live in the real world means people like yourself Jean (No disrespect) who has obviously had a good career yourself in Teaching but misses what many have suffered in lower educated or skilled jobs. This is the reason that many are supposed to work...to get on the property ladder...it is one of the reasons people get up in the morning. Of course, only higher paid education people can afford to save so meaning many work with no incentive...This is what many of the politicians have failed to grasp (Or have they)

Maybe its simply because The Labour party have been found out that people are abandoning the PLP in their droves

He isn't saying that Hunt couldn't help the people he represented. Just that he can't be the best placed person to represent them. I can throw as much cash as I like at African charities, but I don't know if that is the best way to help them.

It's a strange point to bring up third world poverty issues. Almost as if it is not a valid arguement that Stoke is a deprived area. Of course it could be a thousand times worse for us but that doesn't change who we are, our city and what every one of us believes is the best way to improve it.

Labour desperately need to remember who they purport to represent. Shipping in another upper middle class politician from nowhere near Stoke in the lazy belief that they have a safe seat may not work this time round. Depending who the tories and Ukip put up of course.

The more of this thread I read with comments made by jacko and her sickofant possee the more I am convinced this countries ills will only be fixed by an Arab spring type uprising to rid us of the criminal ruling classes !
