Matchday thread: Port Vale v Southend Utd

southends strikers shouldnt be taken to lightly.

simon cox (experienced)

nile ranger (can be lethal on his day)

david mooney (scored a fair few at lincoln didnt he?)

nothing to worry about with Nile could not hit a barn door Ranger if he plays, the guy is useless and only cares about picking up his pay cheque, he would rather spend time on social media telling all and sundry how hard done by he is or show a picture of his next sports car

Very difficult game me thinks as first two games barely creating anything .

Players who r limited aint all of a sudden going be world beaters u have either got it or u aint got it .

Against league opposition we aint scored at all in the friendlies,ok higher league opposition but still about as threatning as a person hitting a empty cardboard box with his fist when offering on the hardest bloke on the planet.

Im usually full of optimism but after speaking to numerous other supporters we r all in agreement a big struggle lies ahead.

U cannot lose in the manner we did v Carlisle and not think that aint going be the case .

Hope the fans turn up but dont bet on it theres a lot who like meself even though ive had a season ticket have no real great enthusiasm for what lies ahead .

Team well i dusner care 11 people who r going give there all and be prepared die for the club ,no passengers like v Carlisle ,no players hiding and a formation which means every player can play at there max and not be a liability .

Utv i was hoping but events of the last week would suggest thats not going be the case .

I was sitting on Southend seafront yesterday reading the local newspaper. Southend are missing two centre halves and want two or three midfielders. They have been unable to recruit new players resulting in the (depleted and demoralised) squad having a heart to heart after two three one defeats to Gillingham. The players have pledged to put things right at Port Vale. Could be interesting?

As to be expected really.

Hopefully our boys had a bit of a heart to heart after the Carlisle game and are determined to put in a performance tomorrow.

Hopefully they're all now aware of the 'requirements'. Can't wait either way.

Not criticising, but the very interesting team lineups shown on the featured programme on the front page of OVF are surely not from 1995 as it says in the opening part of the write-up.

Id guess they are from mid-1980's - a team that was a work in progress, with Robbie Earle and Phil Sproson coming through, the great Andy Jones up front and one of our best keepers Jim Arnold. Not a bad side all round at all.

My favourite game against Southend was 10 years before that in 1975, but at Roots Hall when Vale came back from a shocking first half which left them trailing by 3-0 at the break and secured a point with a superb 3-3 draw.

Already a 'must win' game, Vale need to lay down a marker for the fans and for themselves.

Southend have already conceded six goals but have also managed to outscore the Vale thus far.

We need to attack from the off and get right in their faces, not allow them time on the ball and hopefully score early and get the home crowd behind them.

A 3-1 win and a spot either in or very near the top-six will send me home happy :)
