I was talking to a couple of Torquay Utd diehards last night and they were saying how well Nathan Smith has been playing.

He's getting star man every week and is the first player on the team sheet.

 

Ok Torquay are having a very poor season but it looks as though he could be one for the future.

Yes, I've been following his progress too and he's seen as one of the first choices in the team.

 

I personally think this was a masterstroke by Vale. Nathan will have had a full season of football and be itching to get into the Vale team next summer.

 

If we are under budget cuts and the likes of Duffy/McGivern go then it offers a chance for Smith and Streete to stake their claims.

 

That said - some people will almost certainly moan that Page should have given Smith a chance earlier as the manager can't win on these issues.

 

I think it's clear he needed the experience before he got into contention and it was a good move by the club...

Always looked decent from what I saw of him at youth level and this loan move looks to have done him wonders. It's a huge step up to league football still but it's all going in the right direction for him. Has he been playing CB or RB do we know as I'm sure I saw him at RB on Sky Sports at some point?

Generally plays Centre Back, has a ruthless streak in him as well. He's been sent off twice although one was a bit harsh and the other was a professional foul.

Good move for him and will toughen him up at that level too ready for hopefully stepping it up with us. I am pleased we have managed him by loaning him for a season to get the experience rather than in the past throwing unready youngsters into the first XI and discarding them after a few poor performances (Louis Briscoe, Ross Davidson etc)

...and it was his overhead kick(!) that rebounded off the opposition keeper for Torquay's first, I think.

We should also consider Bergin for central defence as he has played a full season for Kidsgrove (Smith played for Stafford at the same level last season). Perhaps Streete should go out on loan and get regular football. Perhaps some of our loanees could come back before the end of the season and be blooded with a view to future developments. Furthermore can we look at regular adult football for our reserves.

Innis was lucky not to get sent off today. Could have got a second yellow for the challenge in the second half when he brought down their player who was through on goal.

Although to be fair mate if that had been McGivern messing about with it in that position, to allow their player the ball in the first place, he would of been ripped to pieces.
