Best Defence

Recommended Posts

firstly, what a great problem to have.

So who is our best back four? Innis and Streete haven't played together yet, and by what I have seen they will probably be the first choice pairing at some point. Duffy has been great but has probably made the most mistakes this season of any of the back four (possibly a bit harsh?!)

So with Streete we have;

Crewe 0-0, Burnley first half 0-0, Carsile 0-0

With Innis we have

Burnley 1-0 second half, Swindon 2-2, Gillingham 1-1, Doncaster 3-0, West Brom 0-0 after extra time and Bradford 0-1.

So Innis has played more games and against better opposition but has less clean sheets. Does stat tell us anything? Should Streete start the next game regardless?

The best defence is the one that fits together the best, preferably with a mix of skills. The defender making more mistakes, could well be the one doing the most work, and always in the thick of the action. I am not worried about the defence, Page was a defender with vast experience including Prem and International levels, and has made it tighter than in recent seasons. My main concern is the attack, making enough half and full chances.

Duffy has been our bast central defender this year imo. I expected him to be third in line, but he has really stepped up to the plate and made the spot his own so far. Why change anything at the back unless we have to. I think that we need to concentrate getting some more firepower as that is the biggest weakness at the moment.

Just a word of praise for the full backs. Purkiss has come in and made an area of weakness for years his own with solid defending and excellent support play and Dickinson looks like a man reborn at left back. My Man of the Match at Bradford Saturday, he's had a terrific start to the season.

Not sure which mistakes Duffys made?

I think him and Inniss are rightly first choice. Streete will be involved his season no doubt and will likely be the regular once Inniss goes back.

I haven't been to every game but I remember 3 dodgey back passes off the top of my head.

I think it's interesting because Streete seems to be a bit below Innis in the pecking order, but, despite Innis' dominance in the air our record with Streete playing looks better on paper. Just wondering what people's thoughts are on this.

A bit? EXCEPTIONALLY harsh as I can't think of one defensive mistake he's made.

REP can you name someone in the back four that has made more mistakes? My words were probably made the most. That could mean nobody has made more than 1 and Duffy probably has made one. But as mentioned before there have been three hospital back passes off the top of my head

Inniss was to blame for the Bradford goal to be fair.

I honestly can't think of any, in terms of mistakes Innis was at fault for the goal at Bradford, Alnwick for the Gills goal but I can't remember any being Duffy's fault.

I think he has thrived on rising to the challenge of real competition this season and long my he continue to do so.
