Same here. Remember going there once for a pre-season friendly when they were in the old division 1 and beating them 3-2. Must have been 1969/70 or thereabouts but can't find it anywhere. Does anyone else remember it?

I do and no, I can't find it either.

We also lost there by the same score in the early 80s - was it just after we were promoted, 81-82? I remember Lee Chapman getting a first half hat trick for Stoke and Vale getting two back in the second half, one of which was scored by Bob Newton.

Favorite Vale away ground - Crewe Alex, Gresty Road in the 60's, compared to Vale Park sat/stood so close to the game, the crunching tackles and the players talking on the pitch could be heard clearly, the smell of liniment as the players ran out, the main stand propped up by wooden struts, the home end was just a dirt bank.

Villa Park, rises like a cathedral out of the rows and rows of terrace houses.

What a great description of both grounds. You should write a book about the grounds that you've been to .

Thanks for that, took my mind back to Walsall in the 50s, stand roof supported by scaffolding, a 3 sided ground with one goal in the front of the laundry wall. Vale`s Old Rec was close to the pitch too, wingers leaning on the railings prior to a couple of steps to take a corner.

Brammall Lane the other week also deserves a mention for me as it's a proper traditional Football ground in a decent city. Also like Brentford away aswell and those who love to do their boozing and socialsing pre-game will love Griffin Park as it has a pub on each side of the ground.

Was too young for the famous Vale away day at Goodison in the FA Cup in the 1995-96 season; but I am doing the Merseyside Derby in a few weeks time so can't wait to see what the atmosphere there is all about.

Old Victoria Ground aswell for me. It was my 1st ever away day and one hell of an eye-opener doing the last ever derby game between Stoke and Vale. We lost 2-0 but was still a fond experience with all the Vale fans packed on the terrace behind the goal.
