Favourite away ground

Sunderland's Stadium of Light is a special place to watch a football match. It's the only place I've ever felt scared. Not for my personal safety but they absolutely destroyed us one season when they went I think 3 up early and I feared it could have been double figures. We lost 4-2 which was a result for us.

It was also the place I've ever been to where we had to do a quiz to get into the ground. The home end was sold out and fans were so desperate to get in, they were buying tickets for the away end. The Staffordshire police that had come up soon cottoned on to this and started to ask the "Vale fans" questions. "Who's the Vale manager?" "John Rudge" "Who's the Vale Chairman?" " Ah you got me there, mate" was a typical conversation. One guy offered my mate the price of his ticket if he could borrow his Vale scarf to get in. My mate puffed out his chest and said with immense pride "There's not enough money in this world that can buy this scarf off me" What a man!

I remember going to roker park in the 80's with the Junior Valiants, meeting Eric Gates on a stadium tour and then getting David Riley's autograph, followed by a police escort back to our coach trying to avoid bottles being lobbed at us by angry Mackems

I love Griffin Park.

My particular favourite occasion was when several OVF regulars (you know who you are) spent a jolly post-match evening on HMS Onevalefan (the narrow boat Jo and I used to live on in Brentford dock)....

remember one occasion when we were all in the New Inn, one of the many fine ale houses found around the ground, and The Wonder of You came on the Juke box. Numerous renditions, sheer quality.

Don`t suppose you`ve moved your narrow boat down to Gloucestershire now Rob?

Bramall Lane

Always a decent buzz around Sheffield - it's a good city, the ground's in a decent location, and you get and nice steep stands (unless they stick you in the lower tier).

Would have preferred to go through there in Springtime when you can get a proper scenic journey through the Peaks, or if you're going on the Trans Pennine express, past Kinder Scout.

When we beat Chesterfield 5-0 a few years ago I took the slow train back from Sheffield to Manchester and took in the beauty of the Hope Valley, with something suitably atmospheric on my iPod. It was beautiful.

Yes, I've seen some good games at Huddersfield, think Vale were the first away team to win at the new stadium and I remember caning them 4-0, think Ainsworth had a cracking game that day, though I could be confused (I usually am). And who could forget our comeback from 2-0 down with 18 mins left in the FA Cup a few years ago, capped by Rico's sublime free kick winner?

Also liked their old Leeds Rd ground, with the pitch set low beneath the high stands. Colin Tartt still managed to hoof the ball over the main stand. Back in those days the crowds were not as segregated as now and a cloth-capped Hudders fan behind us said he'd been watching them for more than 50 years and had never seen anyone clear that stand before.

And yes, Bramall Lane. Remember going there that Titanic promotion season with us, the Blades and Wolves chasing the two automatic places. First time I'd been to the Lane and I can still picture the sight of coming up the stairs and into the top tier and seeing this bright green pitch laid out in front of us, such a superb viewpoint.

As people have said, so many brilliant memories and so often our impressions of the ground are shaped by our experience there.
