Chancellor's spending review

The winter fuel payment was brought in by the previous Government as a vote catching gimmick, they knew full well any future government wouldn't dare remove it because of the ill feeling it would cause and they weren't particularly bothered how it was funded.

It is all about retaining confidence whilst gently nursing the economy back to health with growth. If confidence is lost unemployment soars to 25% as happened in Spain. In fact the austerity stuff is pretty much not what is happening with the actual overall cuts in spending small. It is an achievement to have arrested the growth in health spending and started to tackle the benefits issues. But the difference between Labour and the Government is primarily about the competence of individuals and the confidence in them. Osbourne and Vince Cable retain confidence, Balls and Milliband are a massive liability.

Is that one is in power and the other gets to say everything is bad without saying how they would put it right.... the great thing is it works the other way around too

Labour made a serious political mistake over the last 2-3 years which shows that Milliband in particular is not intellectually up to the job. If the opposition opposes everything including the obvious actions needed on welfare etc, and does not baseline by adopting for now the government's own spending plans then it for ever draws questions about what it would do when ill prepared and informed to answer. Hence Ed Balls keeps getting taken apart on the Andrew Marr and other shows. But also Milliband surely must have realised that Balls is a huge liability in his own right and if he could have persuaded Darling to continue Labour's economic credentials would be in far better shape. Brown and Balls needed to be confined to history together.

Brown and Balls, more like Dim and Dimmer.

Balls seems all Greek to me,his solution to all our problems is to give tax cuts? Labour spent more than we got income from 2002 to 2010 and now his answer is to borrow more and spend more to reduce the deficit?

Genius Ed.

Cholesterol meds should be cheaper than that particularly if you have Health Insurance, two of the most widely prescribed, Simvastatin and Atorvastatin, are off patent and are generic. None of my business but I would ask your doctor why the good lady needs two anti-cholesterol meds.

She takes Crestor, for which I believe there is no generic alternative. The other is Ezetimibe, which is commonly used with a statin. Our online pharmacy are cheaper than elsewhere and work with our insurance provider.

Crestor is on patent 'til 2016 so there is no generic alternative. I take Atorovastatin which is $25-40 for 3 months supply from Caremark, must admit I'm not convinced about the cholesterol/plaque/heart disease hypothesis but I go along with the doc's.
