Is that the year when Finney Gifted Sheff Utd an equalizer when we were 2-1 up and cost us a vital point. Back then we were grateful to be where we were it was a massive achievement in our eyes to be at the top end of Div 3 for the first time since Gordon Lees days. I can remember seeing little Glyn Williams crying at the end it meant SO much. I stifled me own emotions in favour of a few gallons!:drink:

Weren't we 3-1 up, the Finney back pass handing them their 3 goal on a plate. Think they had Dean and Agarna up front. Remeber the return fixture at their place, when if I recall they murdered us, including one cleared off the line, however they couldn't break us down and ended 0-0.

I remember it so well on a wet wind swept night the pitch was awful and we were absolutely battered but survived. I heard a rumour that the film 'The Alamo' was based on that game.

I remember the manager from that season. On that point alone, there is no comparison.

Other than that, it's a good comparison, I recall going to a few of those games including a particularly miserable 2-1 home defeat by Mansfield.

One of the few posts that's made me feel better - cheers.

My thoughts exactly - different calibre of manager altogether. Old flat cap was a gentleman and a football genius. But hey, let's hope that history repeats itself.

Could be a similar feeling next year or possibly the year after, cause lets face it when was the last time we were consistently at the top of L1 over a season, I dare say 2003-04 almost 10 years ago.

In my lifetime, it's always been the case that any Vale team is at it's worst when defending a lead; whether its a lead at the top of the table or in a game.

In 88-89, it always felt like we had something to chase after, whereas now we're on the defensive.

Adams was right in that we should be looking up at Gillingham but instead we started looking down and getting nervous.

Yes you are right but..people have got to be both realistic and patient and also remember we need to do it on a financially sound basis or go back to square one.

My first ever game was in the 88-89 season a 2-1 home win against Bolton Wanderers. I was 7 at the time and i have loved going ever since.

!! My first game as well, 15th october if I'm not mistaken. I was dancing round the living room all week, I'd shown no previous interest in nogger at all. I was 11 and have never looked back.

I managed to find the programme for the game on ebay a few months ago so i bought it! My next match was abandoned due to fog when we were 3-0 up against Aldershot.
