Artificial Pitches

Vital Spark

Recommended Posts

After seeing the state of the pitch yesterday (which wasn't an excuse by the way) is it time for the FL and FA to consider the use of artificial surfaces again? Artificial and hybrid surfaces are now becoming common in Rugby as well as being allowed in the Champions League by Russian clubs. The technology of such surfaces is a far-cry from the old plastic pitches used by Preston, Oldham and QPR, and in most cases it's difficult to tell the difference between a good synthetic turf and an average grass version.

Thoughts?

Was actually thinking about this the other day when there was a report from Saracens new stadium at Barnet where they have an artificial pitch.

Guess there would be an end to the postpoments that we have through each season (about 4-5 on average?) and there would be no deterioration like we have seen to the pitch recently. It would also be more conducive to playing quick, good football then there would be no excuses for the wingers!

I am pretty old school though and still think it should be played on grass and there's nothing wrong with a little mud.

No artificiasl surface for football under any cicumstance 'til there is a major improvement in technology and the synthetic surface perfoms exactly like grass. Russian clubs have a distinct advantage when a game is played on an artificial surface against a team used to playing on grass.

On an artificial surface, even the latest ones, the ball rolls faster and at times even appears to gather speed, it bounces higher, players get burns when they fall/slide, the surface is harder and less foregiving when a player falls on it resulting in more injuries, especially to the shoulder. If there is a bare patch on an artificial surface a player's studs can get caught in the webbing of the surface resulting in twists to the knee/ankle.
