Maybe Smith should have done his research before signing for Tranmere.

Said that at the time. Seemed to leap at the chance to join the familiar when Crosby gave him a call. Still had several weeks on his Vale contract to go and he penned with Tranmere. Even just reading the forum here one could work out that they had Smurthwaite in the background getting his fangs into Prenton Park. Rovers decline has been hard to miss

A struggling league 2 team with no money, irate fans, falling gates, Crosby and Smurfwaite knocking around? You can’t say that Smudger isn’t experienced!

Having said that, he just isn’t that good and perhaps didn’t have the suitors to stay in the football league that we think, despite 3 players who contributed to the worst Vale team of all time this season moving to league 1 clubs.

He signed with them on 23 May, with the contract to start on 1 July. There's the Nathan Smith approach of agreeing to the first bloke that rings you up with an offer, and there's the Marvin Johnson approach of waiting until the best possible offer comes along and ending up out of the game entirely.

People bad mouth agents, but a good one helps a player to avoid making mistakes like that.

Who are you saying made the mistake? Smith or Johnson ?

Marvin Johnson played a long career at Championship level and played a full season for Wednesday at that level last season. He took an equivalent step back a division that Smith did and is currently unemployed. I would say Nathan got the good move in that scenario.

The man with the best agent is Devante Cole’s and Curtis’. Play utterly underwhelmingly for Vale and contribute to our worst ever season despite being big earners, they then sulk off and get big moves to bigger clubs! Curtis wasn’t even that great in league 2!

Smith, plays as a key player in promotion years, no injuries for many years, loyal service, plays well…gets moved to a struggling league 2 club.

Both! Though maybe Johnson has enough money in the bank that he doesn't need to turn up and lose at League One level every week.

Im just gonna say the club needs to start thinking about long term succes. We keep going up and down. Carols put a lot of money into this club and we are in the same place, league 2. We need to look at the clubs who are being smart with there money. I think for a good longterm plan you need an experienced director of football. We need a director of football before we bring anyone in and they need to be brought in before the end of the season.

I’m pretty sure Rhys Walters is not visiting the oatcake fanzine site anytime soon

Hasn`t the Blueprint for next season already been agreed? We don`t know the content yet.

I doubt very much that when smudge spoke to Crosby that he would tell him the owners want out and that Smurf is paying into the club. They’re going to sell a dream of investment and plans to make a challenge for promotion. Unless he knew another player at the club or another insider how would he know  what the potential situation could turn in to? At the beginning of the season I remember the fan club were surprised to find themselves evicted from their little matchday clubhouse outside the ground with hardly any notice, so maybe things didn’t start to happen til preseason  or the start of the season?  Anyway I wouldn’t blame him for signing for them, local(ish) and still earning a wage. After all how many league two players are going to retire and never have to work again, probably not many.  I would hazard a guess that it’s harder to get back into the game if you’re out of it and not playing. So it’s better to still be involved even if it is for a crap team.
