Match thread: Port Vale v Doncaster Rovers, 31st Aug

Featured Replies

It'll be the 31st August 2024 on Saturday and I've still not seen Port Vale win a match this year! (I was on holiday abroad at Easter for our only win at Vale Park so far in 2024) That has been the only home game I've missed in 2024.

I'm hoping that DM can start to improve his current abysmal 18% win ratio this Saturday.

Given we are still struggling to score goals, I'm also hoping DM will recognise the 5 at the back isn't working and change it to something more positive, attacking, creative, exciting, entertaining!

Thank you for confirming the last official win vs Bristol Rovers at home.

I did ask the question in an earlier post. I think now they just think I'm someone sitting at home eating Oatcake with a red and white shirt on.

The Vale fans nowadays surely aren't a representation of the usual clique on this site. Some are decent and will engage in civil conversation!

I don't think I've seen them win either this year while at the ground .

I want us play bravely let's use Stokes manager as a example last night he played a high line and it reaped a very large win .

As a supporter/follower sat I want see a set up that is brave ,a set up what creates excitement and guts to try and win while leaving themselves a bit vulnerable to conceding  goal or two ,but a set up which reaps  more goals than opposition ,I don't want see players passing it five yards standing still, and not creating angles so that our better players can shine I don't want see players hugging the touchline, and crossing it in from.40 yards you get to the byline pull it back and hope Paton or Garrity or another forward thinking players there to bust the net .

Short changed for a long time at Vale 5 at the backs good if 2 of the 3 main central defenders can play and travel with ball with intent to get that overload , you only need one meat head who heads everything and that's Henegan .

We will be playing three at the back lads. Moore played a variant of 3 CBs (either 3421, 3412, or 352) 40 times in League 1 when they got 98 points, using 2 CBs only 6 times. The fact he has gone into this season doing the same, despite the number of attackers we've got to keep happy, is telling.

I don't think the lack of chance creation is anything to do with the formation. I think Byers is going to have to start in order for us to move the ball through the middle a bit better. We need to get Garrity running beyond Paton. I think there's some potential in playing Chislett deeper but unsure if we'll risk it.

What I think Moore will do:

Debrah Heneghan Smith (assuming Hall and Hart out)

Sang Byers Croasdale John

Garrity Curtis

Paton

Wwhilst I have said it before I worry about this three at the back theory ; I don’t think he has any plans to change and with Hall likely to be missing; I live in hope more than expectations after barrow and I am happy to be proved wrong

Wouldn’t get your hopes up. Can’t see Moore moving away from the back 5 and I don’t see that win % improving this weekend. Big reaction needed from him and this squad

Obviously a huge response needed, a positive one. But it will no doubt be the same negative 5 at the back, Paton roaming around up front on his own again, a thankless task, and some of our more exciting and pacey players on the bench.

Isn't being brave, abandoning the back 5 for a back 4, going for it, and chucking caution to the wind exactly what we did at Barrow and promptly shipped three goals, and everyone was absolutely fuming with it?

Three of the four goals came when we went to a back 4 of Sang Debrah Heneghan Hart, got Benicio, Stockley, Byers, and Dipepa on, and went hell for leather to get an equaliser.

Our team when all the goals went in:

Sang Debrah Heneghan Hart

Byers Croasdale

Garrity

Dipepa Stockley Benicio

Which I imagine isn't very far away preferred lineups of the 'go for it Moore, just attack you stupid idiot!' adherents. Maybe John for Sang and Curtis for Dipepa.

I'd genuinely much prefer we kept a clean sheet this weekend, to resettle us after the 30 minutes of madness at Barrow. I am not going to be fondly remembering the entertaining games I saw if we don't go up. I'm not going to be worried about the turgid 1-0 wins if we do. Getting a third clean sheet in four and really setting up a solid foundation is going to serve us better than nicking a helter-skelter goalfest.

This is going to be a tight game which we'll aim to control, and if we open up and 'go for it' we'll be picked off with ease against a side very good on the break with pace out wide.

It's going to be fairly dull to watch and folk are going to have to get used to it, unfortunately.

Dull to watch equals fans not wanting to attend games which in turn creates a problem for both Darren Moore & Carol

Unfortunately the majority of us

won't tolerate dull negative football😬

Would you be prepared to watch dull negative football if we were top of the league ?

You make good points however you wouldn't have chase the game if score first would you ,and how do you score first if you just pumping the ball forwards to the little bloke up front .

All four of the goals come from just outside area to the right outside box somebody clearly wasn't doing there job of tracking back and our goalie should save 3 of 4 goals so I don't think it was the system change it was some players just cave in as soon as we fall behind its being happening for years .

How about not playing players who cave in so easily .

As a entertainment industry are a pay on the day person going come watch 1 home goal attempt .

Ask yourself the question why folk with season tickets stop going last season they stopped going because we couldn't defend ,we mentally caved in when conceded a goal we had no backbone at all .

That's a player thing not a change of system thing and if have say a extra midfielder on and we controlling the flow of game we less likely concede this pass it slowly to Debrah then to Sang  to pass back to Debrah to Ripley to no one is absolutely horrendous football .

Change it front foot football and score so e <ovf censored> goals .with players who can score at other clubs so why not here .

Expect a low scoring affair on Saturday.

After 3 games the xG for/against per 90 mins for both team is:

Vale = 0.47 for / 0.77 against

Donny = 0.71 for / 0.23 against.

Suggest both sides are tight defensively but don’t create a lot. Vale sit 22nd in terms of xG for per 90 mins at present which isn’t surprising given two league blanks and where our 2 goals scored have both come from set plays.

Irrespective of system Moore has to find a way of making the side more creative from open play, ideally whilst limiting the amount of chances we give away.

We've struggled to create lots of chances for a good while now.

I'm torn between playing for 1-0 wins every week, or a bit of entertainment. Notts County tried the latter route last season and finished near the bottom, whereas often the teams that get promoted grind out the wins.

In terms of this league, I'd be inclined to just grind out results, as you're coming up against some real cloggers who will sit in and make life difficult.

It won't please the natives but I think it's the best way to get promoted.
