Moore explained this in his Radio Stoke interview in Wales. He talked about how difficult it was when trying to get players on permanent deals who are under contract - it isn't just a matter of making a bid and then organising a deal, there are so many things like medicals, which now involve certifying insurance for players who have had long term injuries, signing on fees, agents fees, and the selling club being willing to let the Player go only qhen they have cover in place and know what their own first team squads will look like  which is much later now than other seasons due to the Euros featuring more players.

Even with all that, we don't know for sure it is actually Vale overcomplicating things, it could be any number of parties involved. It's a bit unfair to blame the football club when we don't know the details.

Re players leaving, whilst the likes of Chislett and Garrity are clearly ones we would want to keep they are also attractive targets for other clubs for exactly the same reason.

With both out of contract next summer it becomes a bit of a tightrope in terms of whether the club is able to retain them or not. 

Ultimately, as with any player at this level, everyone has their price.

I’m not sure that’s just a Vale thing, there will be all sorts of stuff going on behind the scenes in the negotiations etc. It’ll be happening all over the country mate. Possibly with this one it was just a case of taking our time, having a good look at him in training/games & making sure it’s the correct decision. After all he did have a bad ACL injury not so long ago 

Edwards is the fifth signing that we've paid something for this summer (Stockley, Tolaj, Paton, Hall). Must be a 21st century record for us?

 

I didn't see any of the friendlies so can't comment on Edwards in those, his under age record seems decent at Southampton though which is an academy that's produced the likes of Walcot and Bale so they know what they are doing down there.  

The big thing for me is like Benicio he appears to have pace.  I watched Burnley's pacey lads going forward dismantle Luton on Monday so it's a good weapon to have against teams and which we've sorely lacked in the past.

The articles I'm seeing say that it hasn't been disclosed whether a fee was paid for Edwards, I think because it's a one year deal that Southampton might have given him a free transfer but who knows

Fantastic academy at Southampton. One of the best in the country

He signed a contract extension in November. Might not have paid a fee but there would have been some sort of compensation

The beauty of us building this squad this year is not only does it give us a great shot at instant promotion back to League 1; it also means if we can get ourselves promoted, this squad will have played with eachother & bedded in for 12 months, meaning we'll be even stronger next term.

Promotion also gives us a better chance of retaining some of the players on 1 x year deals or OOC next summer.

It won't be all smiles every week, there will be ups & downs throughout the season, but we should be right up there come the end of the season. Even the players are talking that way. In Diamond's interview he says he's come here to win the league. It's clearly being talked about behind closed doors as a realistic objective.

The good thing now is that having the creative players like BBB,Diamond and Curtis,Chislett if he stays is that we now have forwards who should be able to put those chances away

I wouldn't have thought Chislett would be doing the Smash on Trent promo vid if he was beggaring off anywhere?
