Middlesborough (H) FLC QF Match Thread 19th Dec

Birches Head Fred

The night played out exactly as it looked on paper. Combine a p!ss poor league one team who've struggled to win a game for months with a decent championship team and what do you get? A trouncing.

The only player who can come off that pitch with any pride is Ben Garrity. Jesse did OK, so did Devine - the rest embarrassing.

Motm - Balmer (for Middlesbrough)

Well I'm all for gallows humour but pathetic chants of ' you're nothing special we lose every week ' and ' we're effing s**t ' is not my idea of the Hamil roar.

The Stanley Matthew’s chant did it for me 😂

Where do they come from to sing songs like that

Everything about that was utter crap, but for me the most disappointing aspect was the pathetic support.

My mate is a Burnley fan and came along for the trip. He was baffled that our fans were so quiet considering we were in the quarter final of the League Cup for the first (and possibly last) time in our history. Me and a few other lads tried to get those around us in the Hamil going but it was flatter than the Cruzcampo I queued for half an hour in the fanzone for. Pathetic. The Bycars was never the problem, it’s our half-arsed fans.

My prediction of “the fans will somehow be at fault” has never been more quickly proven.

It’s becoming very enjoyable to play “how long will it take for someone to give the fans an e-kicking?”. Join us next week.

What a let down that was tonight, I honestly thought that we would give them a game, not saying we would win but felt it would be close with maybe the odd goal in it, how wrong I could be.  We were never in the game after the first 10 minutes and I can take losing but the manner we lost in was awful, we got nowhere near them, we made them look like a premier league team and they are miles off being that.  After half-time, I thought we would come out all guns blazing, in their faces and be on the front foot but looks like Crosby told them to back off and keep the score down.  I see lots of football on tele and cup ties when lower league teams more often lose but they go down fighting but we went down with no fight at all.  It is amazing the clamour for Yak now after that, I think he has been poor since he has come when he has played as well and in January we need a better option than all of Balmer, Jones and Yak in that position, none for me are good enough.

I think we were just outmatched tonight. I will say though it seems the gap between the Championship and L1 is wider than it ever has been before and it feels for us next to impossible to bridge any time soon without serious cash. They were just quicker, more intelligent and precise than us.  Just wish we had shown a bit more mongrel about us whereas we came across far too nice.

Just hope Olly is ok more importantly than anything.

When the likes of Wednesday with their massive fanbase are rooted in the bottom 3 it shows the gulf.

Other than Rotherham as true minnows the rest are all much of a muchness between 7th and 21st. The days of Vale, Crewe and Stockport holding their own like in the 90's are a pipe dream.

The reality is we have mostly League Two level players that are managed by a Conference level manager. Who can we genuinely say is League One quality that's actually our player? Ojo. Garrity perhaps. Chislett on his day. Ripley. After those you're really struggling. But that doesn't excuse such a feeble performance under the lights at home against an injury hit, average Championship team. The game was over as soon as we gifted them the second goal, which was horrendous play from Ripley and Balmer.

Devine was so poor tonight i'm sorry i'm not having that. Couldn't find a pass at all nothing came off for him, he tried & you can't say that about all those players tonight so fair play but that should be a given. Garrity was anonymous but he got stuck in at times. Jesse the only one to come out of that with any positives for me

Not a fan of Balmer by any means but for their second goal I feel Ripley is more at fault, it was an awful ball to a guy who is not good enough, don't give him a ball like that, against better opposition you will be punished, Balmer is no John Stones and was a very poor mistake by Ripley.

He's definitely one for the future and one of the very few bright spots.

We're just really <ovf censored> at both ends of the pitch and that's a bit of a problem in football.

more than holding his own in recent performances his consistency is good to see

As I’ve said before, Crosby isn’t a typical Port Vale manager and the football he wants to play just isn’t us. Fans were attached to Clarke and Adams, but a lot of fans will never get that with Crosby.

We tried to out play a team that are simply better than us. We were never going to beat them at their own game.

I’m just disappointed we never made into a proper cup tie. It was pretty forgettable overall.
