Wigan Athletic (H) match thread - 16th Dec

Having been a Vale fan for over 55 years I have pretty much seen it all over the years. I hope that I am now a bit wiser as well as a lot older than I once was and try (not always successfully) not to get too worked up following a bad result and/or performance. I have done more than my fair share of kicking the furniture around when I got home after a bad loss (are there any good losses?). Nowadays I tend to reflect on the many similar experiences I have witnessed over the years, and it is amazing how the more things change the more they stay the same. I would love to be watching the Vale storming up the league(s) playing ticca tacca football whilst realistically accepting that this will never happen. So, I call in the pub for a few enjoyable pints before the game then go and see what sort of performance and result we get that day. The only thing that I do know for certain, is that I will be going up the Vale and supporting the lads for as long as I am physically capable. As this thread is for tomorrows match my prediction is 2 - 0 to the Vale.

I don’t dream but just live in hope that our manager understands that we start defending when we are winning but his tactics are to defend from kick off and I will be in the Bull’s head before kickoff and I have been supporting the club from 1965 not that that gives me any more importance than any other supporter and I worked for the club as Podiatrist for almost 40 years and I blame my dad (RIP) who had a barbers shop in Burslem for almost 70 years💕

Did we defend from kickoff against Stevenage...??  I wasnt there (live in Somerset and couldnt get the game on iPlayer) but from what i heard we took the game to them for 65 mins.

I don't mean this as a boast, but I've clocked-up even more years than you-this is my 70th year of attending Vale Park.  I say that only to give context to why I empathise so much with what old school has said. And yes, I too will be at the game tomorrow.  What is it they say?...............Through thick & thin.....UTV!

Must win league match tomorrow.  Baring in mind we were in complete control until the 63rd double change on Tuesday, I make one change t the starting 11, as we are informed Conor Grant can’t do a full game - so I will start with him.  If Massey is fit he starts based on Tuesday first half.

                        Ripley

Massey Jessie Lowe Smith Grant

             Ojo.     Olly

    Chizzy.        Devine

             Garrity

one deflected goal doesn’t get Loft a start in my 11.   Sang is cover for both wing backs.  NO TAKING OLLY & ALFIE OFF on 60 odd minutes

Let’s focus on winning this game only.

Matchday .

Let's hope folk have done there Xmas shopping and are attending .

We scored 3 last home game there's no reason why we cannot score 3 again if players have the right mindset .

No idea about Wigan and there form but always a good team generally over the years won the F.A Cup etc .

Hope Alfie and Ollie are available if not the players who took to the field the other night if selected are going have to do hell of a lot better than they they did when coming onto the field .

I'm looking forwards to it there's being   so much good about a lot of our seasons work in patches,( but patches don't win football matches it has to be a 96 minute performance gamely) though that's the problem we don't sustain our performance levels)players start making big errors and then he comes on the radio and it's same old .

Well today it needs be different I want a 90 minute display nothing less .

I believe Uche come on and won penalty at Stevenage yet Crosby has just sat there last 30 off normal time and not changed the system just let Stevenage build up a head of steam and not used the lad after watching Exeter game in some form I can categorically say he Uche played well especially when the non stop running Dipepa come on so for neither  to be brought on to stop Nathan Thompson from having the freedom of the city was absolute terrible management for me .

Today he needs to make no errors and react to a game quicker if sees opposition get a head of steam up .

You do not let it occur .

Come on Vale it's time to show everyone that we are a good side because for 63 mins on Tues we showed we are

We have got injuries galore.

Going to extra time & then penalties only a few days ago will be tiring especially mentally after being 2-0 up & then losing whilst Wigan are coming into the game fresh.

Port Vale 2 v 1 Wigan

Chislett & Loft

Yes we went to extra time on Tuesday but they can negate that to some extent by not doing any strenuous stuff in training the rest of the week. Probably done no running in training just going through the tactics etc for the Wigan game.
