However I'd offer him a deal till the end of the season. Unless he's injured, he's only been without a club for 2 weeks

I absolutely would too. Think he lives in Stafford and DMs signed him before. No brainer for us if the wage can be agreed. DF mentioned on that podcast that we were looking at paying transfer fees in January so there must be a decent budget remaining.

I still wish we would have asked Burnley for a striker as part of the Tommy Mac deal

Players can only be signed if out of contract before the end of the transfer window.

We can’t sign anyone who was under contract at 11pm on 1st Feb.

Re Dwight Gayle. He signed a five year contract at Newcastle in 2016. When his contract expired he was given a new one by Ashley on £60k a week when everyone thought he would be released. It was only because Ashley couldn’t be bothered to find another striker even thought it was obvious Gayle was, by that time, simply not a Prem League striker.  When he signed for Stoke Newcastle continued  to pay £40k a week of his wages. Stoke have now paid him off and his last Newcastle contract expires in June. I don’t know if he will still be getting paid the £40k a week by them but it certainly appears he is not short of a few quid so five bob a week should get him!!!
