Goalkeeping

Funny thing keepers. I think the Spurs keeper Hugo Loris is not good enough to play for them or be a PL keeper. Meanwhile he has a World Cup winners medal and runner up medal for France. I note he did one of his gross errors in the first final. I thought there was more chance of icebergs forming on Venus than him winning the World Cup final pen shootout against Argentina. But there he remains. How can it be!?

I get your point. And football is a ruthless profession. Perhaps I'm slightly inspired by Sam Johnson who has now had many years as Halifax keeper. It's possible to find a viable level.

And he was a fine penalty taker.

Other than being a complete psychopath (and who doesn't love a good psycho?) I still think LC is the best keeper we have had since Scott Brown

Scott Brown was light years in front of Covolan.

This myth that Covolan was an amazing keeper doesn't stand up. He was erratic, his kicking was awful, positioning terrible and the only time he could catch a cross was when he clattered people, and look how that ended.

He is no better than Stone or Holy.

I'm really hoping Stone becomes convincing in the remaining games. I don't think that is out of reach.

Stone just isn’t good enough watched him warming up with stevens at Fleetwood facing shots from the coach and he was shocking to the point he was getting frustrated with himself  he’s not as good as stevens and he ain’t no Scott Brown

He also had difficulty choosing between the ball and an opposition player when kicking.

Agree with this apart from the catching crosses bit.  I always felt confident Covolan would claim the ball from a cross.  His handling in the air was very good from what I remember.  Brown wasn’t exactly renowned for coming off his line was he?

It seems quite a thing Vale goalkeepers not coming off their line to claim balls in the box. When was the last goalie we had who commanded his area ?  Almost seems like its a quality we ignore, not on the matrix ?

I was at Sutton away. He couldn't catch a cold that day.

A bit of blind panic set in the whole of the defence that day.  As I say, my overall perception of Covolan was decent on crosses, but never convinced about the rest of his game.  As it stands, on crosses, for me Stevens slightly better than Stone, who tends to punch a bit more, Brown was usually rooted to his line, but at least that meant he was there, on his feet, to potentially make a save, Holy looked hopeless for a guy his size.  I always thought Holy looked bereft of any confidence when he played, but maybe just his normal body language, no idea, but he’s played most games this season in a team that’s riding high with a good chance of being promoted so what do we know?

Agree with @valiant_593 GK has to be top priority in the summer.

I thought Stone did ok Sat, His control and distribution in general was very good but for me he’s no more than a 2 at this stage of his career. Absolutely Stone should be in the team instead of Stevens to help him develop.
