Match Thread: Port Vale v Accrington Stanley

Featured Replies

Accrington were the first team Ive seen time wasting as they ran out of the tunnel at the start of the game. Only 99 of their fans turned up, if they play like that im surprised that many would turn up to watch them at home.

Best player for them , the ref.  Im sure if a crisp packet blew across the pitch and hit one of their players he would fall over and get a free kick. Ref would probably then book a Vale player.

A half match fit Proctor was the best we could manage upfront. Not good enough for this game against a very poor Accrington.  Equally hasnt been good enough for the whole of January and until we get a fit striker on the pitch will continue to be so.

I'm a professional civil and criminal investigator now retired. So I'm a bit out of order shooting my mouth off emotionally earlier. But the evidence before our eyes last night is that there were mistakes that impacted the game significantly and overwhelmingly favoured Accrington. These include:

- Radio Stoke frequently commenting on how the Accrington Manager and Assistant Manager were constantly harassing the fourth official and seeking advantage from this. This was systemic.

- There appeared to be far more free kicks given against Port Vale than Accrington which did not seem warranted by foul play. This calls into question the willingness of the referee to give soft free kicks for dives by Accrington players.

- The Accrington keeper and players were allowed to slow down the game excessively assisting in disrupting any rhythm the home team may build up and using up overall game time.

- The Accrington penalty was the result of a dive and not foul play warranting a penalty.

- The referee made a mistake of such enormity with the disallowed goal and giving of a penalty, that lack of integrity is a serious alternative explanation to mistake.

I am not satisfied with the quality of refereeing and raise the question there is a presence of bias in the referee's decision making. This should be investigated to ensure the decision making is the result of mistake / incompetence or whether there is a criminal dimension to it in the form of say bribery or involvement with betting etc.

This from Tony Dyche is spot on.
For anybody that does not know who Tony Dyche is, he is die hard Vale fan.
We have loads to be thankful to him for because he was one of the original Black & Gold founding members back in the day.
He is also a referee
What does Black and Gold and him being a Referee have to do with it ? that was a goal and Coleman thought it was harsh, I listened numerous times and I can't hear a whistle, that Ref. was rubbish period.

Just stick the pen away. Why were no senior players stepping up to take the pen? If it goes in we get a goal and they get a red card so it could of worked out in our favour. Remember the shoot out against Swindon? Benning, Pett why were they not taking it?

Just when you think refereeing couldn't  get any worse after Saturday's match,up pops this clown.

Unbelievable.

Give it a rest coloumbo. Refs had a shocker nothing more sinister than that.

Unfair to blame Butterworth for missing the penalty. That goalkeeper must have been 6 foot 7, if he picks the right direction more than likely he's saving it.

Only thing I’d say with Butters penalty was the height he hit it at was giving the keeper more of a chance. It was not a shocker of a spot kick as it was on target at least but probably something for him to look at for the next occasion if he has to take one. Still think Pett probably should have been the nominated taker while Conlon was off but no point dwelling on it now.

Poor penalty in my view.  We sit behind the goal and could tell which way it was going.  Struck it well but wrong height.  With a tall keeper, as you point out, it had to be right in the bottom corner unless he went high or down the middle.  Have to say he didn’t look confident and I felt took a bit too long with his huffing and puffing psyching himself up, but what do I know.  In fairness though he hits the target so the keeper at least had a save to make.

Technically a free shot from twelve yards should be a goal every time but we all know it’s not that simple. Average penalty well saved, including knocking it well out of the danger area.

My main observation would be that neither penalty was a penalty: first one give a free kick to Vale and book their player for simulation, second one, give  the goal and book their player for bad sportsmanship (he can’t be sent off for preventing a goal scoring opportunity if the goal is given).

I think Coleman got to the ref, I don’t blame Accy (an overachieving club which I like) as in their situation you just do anything you can to get an advantage but needless bookings for us - including Smith who he also denied a goal (? Evening up following Coleman’s previous moan)  and key blatantly wrong game changing decisions… it wasn’t the usual case of both sides suffering from mistakes, he lost his neutrality.

Fair enough you'll have had a better view than me in the Paddock. Has to be a psychological disadvantage for Dan though. You're not usually a peno taker, it's your first of the season and you're staring at an absolute giant. Must make the target seem so small.

Tbf mate, there is def a whistle. Although like I say I can't tell if before the handball or not so hard to tell if the ref or from the crowd. But def a whistle.

The ref was the worst ever, but it was not all one way. Every time Jones took a long throw, it was way further forward than where the ball went out. The ref did nothing. Ref was incompetent rather than biased.
