I don't think even Smurfwaite would appoint Harry Kewell unless he genuinely hates Port Vale. It didn't go well for Askey at Shrewsbury but then again it didn't go great for Mourinho at Manchester United. He did a tremendous job for Macclesfield and that alone puts him ahead of Neil Aspin if you're comparing the two. He wouldn't be my choice but is probably the best of what we're realistically able to get.

If it's Askey then I wish him all the best and sincerely hope he's a massive success.

 

However, it does look like another convenient appointment. Local, links to Vale, potentially happy to work for less than his market rate because he's had a nice payoff from Shrewsbury (speculating a little here).

 

Wouldn't it be nice if (just once) the club would actively seek out someone who is not the convenient and instead is part of a long term strategy on how to maximize performance on the pitch?
