FA Cup 2017-18

Always thought the FA Cup lost something when replays stopped happening the Mon, Tues, Wed after the initial meeting. There was still a buzz from the original game, when the replay is played 9, 10 or 11 days later that buzz has gone and it's more like another game.

So true. That rule was introduced at the behest of the police to allow them to plan cover for replays. It was bought into force when football hooliganism was a much bigger problem than it is now.

It was and is way over the top for most games, but football managers are far more precious these days and would faint at the thought of a replay 48 or 72 hours later.

Grantham and Hull at home were great nights. Enfield away was less so!

To the older generation like myself, the FA Cup was one of the highlights of the season. Indeed home ties generally attracted one of the highest attendances of the season irrespective of the opposition. Now we’ve come to selling tickets for these matches near half price in an attempt to attract anyone at all. Why is this ? Exactly the point made above. Managers treating the fans and the competition itself with contempt by fielding weakened sides. Yet something else ruined by the Greed Is Good League.
Vale at Liverpool 0-0, then at home on the Wednesday. Stoke had lost 6-1 at Anfield on Boxing day. How we lorded it for a few days, nearly 100,000 watched the 2 games in total. Could not happen today.

One of my first experiences at Vale Park aged 8. Not sure what my Dad was thinking about taking me to that game but I’ve been hooked ever since

Arnold was another one, we were 2-1 down at one time and came back to win 5-2, John Ridley scored a wonder goal. There must be many other games we won. Remember Barnsley was a bad one, we drew 1-1 at their place on Saturday and lost 1-3 at Vale Park on the Monday, I remember being gutted.

The atmosphere when we won was tremendous, the gates much bigger than for League games and the whole of the ground used to sing. The FA Cup games were the biggies back in the pre-90's.

Walsall 1-3 at home when John Connaughton let one through his legs

Shrewsbury away, 0-0 until they scored in about the 18th minute of injury time. Heartbreaking.

Just been watching the Leicester v Fleetwood game. Half ground closed, Foxes (or Filberts in my eyes) virtual reserve side. The FA Cup is dead. Murdered by the Greed Is Good League. I am sick to the few back teeth that I have left of foreigners ruining our national game. I don’t damn well care about the precocious Champions League, but I do care about our footballing heritage, of which the FA Cup is the pinnacle. If nobody who matters cares, then scrap the competition. Attendances now show you what people think. I realise that I may well be regarded by the younger generation as a moaning Old Duffer, but I HATE the Premier League and all concerned as it, in my Old Duffers view, has ruined the game I used to love. Whereas before I used to gorge on all Football matters, now all I care about is Vale and Vale alone. The people in charge at the FA & Football League should take a very serious look at themselves. Money is the root of all evil, and the Premier League has proved that beyond all doubt over the last quarter of a century.
