Yates given free transfer? No, contract extended to end of season 2018...

That I would possibly agree with but people here forget Aspins got very little movement in the transfer market because most players have contracts past January. Yates going out whilst people like him would have been one of he only wages that could have been saved and used for a replacement. Getting sentimental over Yates could now mean that he’s got even less to work with than he had a week ago.

I don't think it's a case of getting sentimental over Adam - it's just a matter of deciding what the right thing is for both parties and doing it. That may well be not renewing his playing contract and giving him a testimonial? It may be giving him a non-playing coaching role within the club? It may be putting him in charge of the marketing department! We'll just have to wait and see what official announcement is made then respond to the facts, not the rumours.

People talk about giving Yates a coaching job like its stacking shelves at Asda ! Coaching, I would have thought, was a highly responsible job and requires coaching badges which, I doubt, he has. It is a terrible situation the lad finds himself in, but surely you cannot give a responsible position to someone who, presumably, is not qualified to do. I don’t know what the answer may be, but just giving him a job out of sheer pity surely isn’t.

He has been involved in running local teams with Tom Pope, and was eloquent and obviously educated and aware when joining the Radio Stoke commentary team.

Compared to many, I am sure he would shine in an admin or coaching position at the club, and really it is a case of loyalty and looking after your own, not pity.

Yeah sounds like total lunacy, because we are a business that’s not well off, has a wage budget that’s far too high and we are carrying huge deadwood hampering the new manager bring in players. Injured or not Yates is surplus to requirements in the first team. My point about the reserve game is he hasn’t played more than 10 times for our first team in the last 2 seasons. These lads are well paid, well insured, well looked after sports professionals and you lot talk they earn £50 quid a week playing for the dog and duck. Xmas makes no difference to this situation in the slightest his contract was up anyway and he will get a payout from his insurance and free medical care from us. To give a player that can’t play a players contract is totally ridiculous. A job in the academy or youth setup certainly he’s a good lad and spent a long time here but that should be it.

"We're a business".

This prevailing attitude from Vale fans is symptomatic of why we're in the position we are. Why the atmosphere is terrible. Why we are attracting sub 4000 crowds on a regular basis.

Port Vale means more to me than most businesses do matey. If thats the approach you're taking here, then bye bye, we're done, you don't come out of this brilliantly.

Common sense 100% agree, judging by some of the other comments you would think Adam had delivered their children by hand, personally married them, scored the winner in the champions league final and was originally born on the pitch and adopted by John rudge

I have run local football teams, but would not expect to be employed by supposedly professional football teams purely on that basis.

Ah yes, I for one am shocked.

Lets hope Smurf sees the backlash from the sensible majority on here (not the balls to Yatesy, we need a new backup RB clowns) and backtracks, and we give Yates a 6 month deal so he can sort himself out.

Absolute class “the sensible majority” nearly pissed my settee laughing at that. Jesus if we had listened to you lot of pipes we would be rock bottom giving Brown till January then another 6 months to turn it round whilst flying towards the conference. It’s not a case of balls to Yatesy it’s a case of his deal is up and it’s very unlikely he would have had it renewed given Aspin was talking about the squad being too big. If his contract was up in June then yes bad timing and bad taste...however it’s not it’s up in 10 days.

I applaud your commitment to the club, as I do to the vast majority of contributors to this site. However, to blame the clubs current woes on supporters attitudes is simply wrong. Our current problems stem from years of mis-management by various people, but NOT from the undying support from our loyal fan base.

I respect your opinion, but we are talking about someone who is already employed by the professional team and was injured during the course of his employment - he didn't fall off a ladder at home.

It might be different if your employer had many years service from you, then whilst performing your work duties you were injured with not just a broken bone or a few bruises, but what our manager described as 'the worst football injury he has ever seen'.

If say, a policeman or security guard received similar injuries towards the end of their time doing their job, you'd expect them to be looked after - I don't think this is so different. Even more so if the injuries were accidentally caused by one of their colleagues.

I fail to understand why some people are so worrid about a relatively tiny amount of money as if it were their own last few quid and they were going to starve at Christmas.

It isn't - it is a tiny drop in the ocean for a multi-millionaire owner who should feel morally obliged to support one of his most loyal employees,

This is an ideal opportunity for showing generous and creditable character traits and build some goodwill by someone who has consistently failed to do that for a very long time.

That may seem witty and sarcastic, but nobody thinks those things.

Perhaps they just appreciate, in these days of selfish, greedy and disloyal grabbing players, a local lad who has an affinity with his team and has stayed with them through good and bad, playing for free and turning down better wages elsewhere.

We could have done with a dozen or more Adam Yates's in the last few seasons.

That's just silly. He only did three of those.

Very good interview with Ray Williams and also Neil Aspin on Radio Stoke few minutes ago - Ray concludes it is all down to Norman Smurfthwaite and the interview with Aspin suggests he has not been involved yet. The plot thickens....

Bea,I actually thought Williams was talking his normal b0110x.He blamed Smurf then proceeded to say he didn’t know what was happening.

We will just have to agree to differ.

I will say though, that the 2 things are not incompatible in that I think Smurf should have taken action in informing one of his longest serving employees what is likely to happen in January a while ago - not leave it until 3 or 4 working days before the man will se his income disappear. That is regardless of the injury - the circumstances of letting this dwell until now make it worse.

So Ray Williams doesn't know what is happening, because nobody else does either (Neil Aspin said at the same - he is clearly not part of this decision, WHY NOT ???) - it appears from tonight's radio show that only one person knows what will happen and copntrols it totally, Smurf. And he has left it far too late in the day hoping it will go away as a problem probably.

The confusion and lack of information, given that the clock is ticking for Adam Yates, now just days from no income, is one of the worst aspects - it needs sorting soon, and could rapidly become yet another PR disaster from the master of blackening the club name.

Get it sorted now, put Adam Yates mind at rest and avoid that Norman - you never know, people might actually applaud you for it.
