Turkey holiday

I'm sorry to hear of your aunts story and I meant not to say that all turks are good people and friendly. However there are good and bad in all countries - not least our own who displaced many Africans as slaves to America and even our own people to Australia to name just 2 instances. We could also mention what we did to the Scots and Irish. Does that make each and every English person bad ?

If everyone lived by my ethics there would be no need for armies or even police. There would be no Borders - just the human race living in peace and harmony and building a world for the future. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks like I and so atrocities the like of your aunts will continue.

How can we change things I don't know , we probably never will.

I hear and agree with most of what you say. The two points you make were 2 centuries ago and I would hope that we as a nation have learnt from our mistakes in the intervening years. The problem with the Cyprus situation is that it happened only 40 odd years ago and the Turks still occupy Northern Cyprus to this day. The ironic thing about the Invasion of '74 was that my English uncle who married his Cypriot wife was told by the British Embassy there about the FORTHCOMING invasion and was advised to leave. So the Brits were well aware of what was afoot long before it took place.

What old chestnut ? This is not confrontational, I just don't know what your point is.

Not trying to be confrontaional whatsoever to anyone, just that the old ploy of "Look what Britain has done in the past" is often trotted out in discussions and as I said, there's hardly a country on the planet that's got nothing to be ashamed of. viz an earlier post (not be you).

You are right of course. I only trotted England out as an example because I assumed ( maybe incorrectly ) that rr was English. As you say we could mention pretty much any country. But it isn't countries that are the problem - it's the people. We should be one people with one country - Mother Earth.

Amen to that, let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

My best man for whom I will be best man next year is Greek. As part of his national service he had to patrol the boarder with Turkey and told me a number of stories. He doesn't hate an entire nation though' date=' he's far more open minded.[/quote']

Yet often a nation is blamed for the sins of the forefathers

Well I'm glad my holiday has led to a debate , it's not changed my mind about holidaying in the beautiful turquoise coast , and meeting more lovely Turkish friends .

Your right it is a country under threat , but at the same time we're all under threat , next year will be my 5th visit and if it goes as well as the others then there will be a 6th . No monsters, threats and impending doom are gonna spoil my enjoyment of this beautiful country .
