Trump

Nice to see that Donald Trump has honoured his pledge to return the bust of Winston Churchill to the Oval Office.

It was removed by President Barack Obama and replaced by a bust of Martin Luther King in 2009.

I don't think Obama was particularly enamoured with Britain, hence the aggressive back of the queue quip and his interference with the Brexit vote which I think angered a lot of people.

As I said before, I cant see that dropping napalm on civilians or cluster bombing, planting anti-personnel mines and probably 20 other things are actually any worse than this 'torture', which is not condoning it.

It just gives the manipulators who say that 'there is humanity in war' something to hide behind, as they know there is not.

Things are just hidden, as in the recent conflict in Ukraine, where the Ukrainian forces supported by the West were shelling civilian areas of the city of Donetsk (and other places) day after day, but it was not reported here, or condemned, just what the rebels and Russians were doing.

This allowed Obama, Cameron and easily hoodwinked gullible members of the public to believe that only one side was doing anything wrong, when both were. The same happened in Kosovo, Bosnia, Syria and Libya where many war crimes were committed by both sides but only the ones that suited Western politicians were reported.

Spot on mate.

Also, on the subject of the bust of Churchill, I wouldn't want it anywhere near me as apart from offering some laudable leadership qualities during WW2 he was a largely detestable character, imperialist, monarchist, racist and class ridden.

In 2002,he was proclaimed "The Greatest Briton Of Them All" based on approximately a million votes from BBC viewers.Churchill was also rated as one of the most influential leaders in history by TIME.Churchill College,Cambridge was founded in 1958 in his honour.

That doesn't change the facts regarding what he believed in and how he behaved in the vast majority of his political career and it's because of that I don't share the popular view of him being wonderful. No doubt Obama, as the son of a Kenyan, had a similar view. If your forebears were subject to imperialist pillage would you revere the memory of one of your oppressor's greatest advocates?

Talking of British leader did u see our latest encumbant on stage with Donald where he showed another skill - that of ventriloquist - couldn't see his lips moving when May was talking was an impressive act wonder if he can drink a glass of water next time they have a jiont press conference ?😃

The removal of that bust was entirely justified and understandable. The furore surrounding it completely ignored the vile things Churchill did or authorised, in Kenya and elsewhere.

The narrative that leadership during WW2 is his sole legacy is a shame I think, because people blank out a lot of other, darker, history.

I wonder what % of those voting were of Polish or Australian decent?

No details I'm afraid Barry.

Out in this neck of the woods my Polish friends are very clear re. their thoughts about Churchill: He announced in 1939 his support for Poland then post war, and along with his Yalta mates, literally gives Poland to the Russians.

I wonder if that was the case in the UK?

Yes, of course that is SO important compared to his attitude on climate change and signing for those new environment-destroying oil pipelines, planning to burn much more coal and let the whole planet rot.

At least we'll have a piece of metal to console us.

But did Churchill and Roosevelt have any choice, was there any apetite for further conflict. Didn't Churchill and Roosevelt initiate a push up through the Balkans well before the end of WWII to try and head off the Russians from eastern Europe, weren't many Allied lives lost in this push.

Sounds a tad ungrateful from the Polish people.

Let's hope it helps us to iron out our problems?
