You wouldn't believe the money that's wasted in the NHS.

I would..I know very well someone who has been a NHS nurse for over 20 years and I hear and see a lot of it. She works in staffing now so I get to hear all that goes on re agencies and so on. But in any large organisation there will be lots of waste and inefficiencies..but we have to try to minimise them

If anyone would like to know how it works here (NL) here goes. You have pay 100 euros a month pp, that's everyone, not just posh people. That's on top of the 52% tax rate. Having paid this, you have an 800 euro excess. And you are not covered for any fancy stuff, like physio. You have to pay that yourself.

Miss an appointment, you get fined the full cost. Try turning up at A+E without being sent there by your Doctor, liable for the full cost unless it was a genuine emergency.

As we all have issues, (mainly the wife and son having a genetic eye problem, don't take the ****, it's a serious business) we pay about 5,000 euro per year. On top of the 52% tax.

And don't even think about, well in that case you get a good service. Nope. You just get fobbed off, but you pay for it.

And no-one argue please. We've lived here 25 years or so and are completely in the system, and completely understand the system. This is the system in NL. And it is compulsory,

Interesting..thanks

There is a need for incentives not to abuse the system but I'd be concerned that those with genuine needs don't seek help cos of the cost/penalties/etc. Are there any stats in NL regarding that? Something like number of people who didn't seek medical help when they should or needed to cos of the cost/penalties/etc?

I like the fact that everyone pays in. I like the fact that timewasters at A&E get charged, same for missed appointments. Given all of that, it's mistifying that service is poor. Is there a reason?

In France, where I've lived for 10 years, the system is different.

Here, everyone must be in the system. Everyone must contribute, through taxes and according to income, and then the System pays around 65 or 70% of the cost, depending on the nature of the treatment.

The remaining 35/30% of the cost is paid by by a Top-up insurance policy. Again, those in work will usually have a very good top up policy provided by the employer. Those not in work, like me, have to buy a top up policy. Our 'middling' policy, for the two of us, currently costs 80 euros a month.

As we don't work, our healthcare costs us 8% of gross income, plus the top up policy. for us, this year, that's around 200 euros a month (currently about £176 a month.

The good news is: The care we receive is excellent! Doctors appointments within 2 days max, up to 30 mins per appointment without a problem. Specialists barely a week or two away, for a cancer-type issue, next day. We really rate the quality of the French system.

But Bill that is exactly what your first post said. It referred only to his background and name.

That was the post to which I responded and where you said I'd missed the point. To me, you were saying he couldn't possibly be a socialist because of his name and background. I simply dispute that.

I think you've missed totally the irony in my oiginal post!

It would seem there's a good chance the toff Tristan will be replaced by GEORGE GALLOWAY a far more appropriate mp for Stoke on stench imho

Someone who appeases the Muslim community in favour of other victims such as Jews is never a good option... his views on the Arab Spring were generated just to take seats in London and Bradford. He may not be a good option at all Another self serving Elitist whom will do anything to appease voters even if it means taking some very controversial views, Stoke would be the wrong place for him given the climate and the anger in relation to other certain ethnicity sections of the community

I really can't imagine gorgeous George campaigning for the good people of Hanley (is that in sot central?)..he'd better be careful doing his cat impressions as he'll end up in a takeaway

I quite enjoy his Sputnik show on RT so I hope he carries on with that rather than wasting his time in a lame duck party representing a lame duck city
