The Budget 2016/17

I said last summer that the way to go was with a smaller, higher quality first XI, backed up by 3 excellent loan players, if we haven't got a lot of money.

I'm not sure why we have amassed this huge squad of players, though I realise that many of them are youngsters. The bulk won't get anywhere near the first team and we need to be cruel to be kind for the good of the overall budget.

We got it wrong this year because we haven't had good value out of our loan players. Inniss was injury prone and Uche and Kennedy not good enough despite Uche's good start. Robinson I'm afraid seems to be another one that hasn't worked out. Had those 3-4 lads been better it would have improved us a lot.

The difficulty arises when injuries and suspensions take hold and then with a small squad we are in trouble. That's why Page, maybe wisely, kept the likes of Birchall and Yates, although we haven't used them much and they won't be on big wages.

It's a fine balancing act but ultimately you get what you pay for.

Still, as long as the likes of Burton and Walsall can do well, hope springs eternal.

You either have to have lots of money or a great manager.

What is the logic behind the longer loan deals?

I'm just curious and not having a go at the PL/FL but won't it hinder youngsters?

After all, take Jordan Hugill who surged into the first-team here after 3-4 weeks at Gateshead. If that half-/full season ruling was in place would Gateshead have taken the risk on taking him for half a season? And if there's no recall in place would that mean little incentive for someone like Hugill to "go for it" because he knows he's not going to get recalled and put in the first-team.

It just seems to me that by limiting loans to long-term deals, you will have lots of clubs like Vale reluctant to take a risk on a youngster and sometimes it is that smaller risk (of taking an unknown for a month or so) that unearths gems.

Does it all leave loads of potentially promising young players that no-one dares to take the risk of taking on loan for half a season just sitting on the sidelines?

Also - does this mean you can still have an emergency loan - or if you run out of left-backs through injury is your only option to get someone on a half-season deal - even if your injury crisis only lasts a month? This may particularity apply next season if we have a smaller squad.

Don't think there is a logic, isn't it a European initiative?

as i see it the first thing is that Smurf needs to decide which side of the coin hes on....is he "balls deep" & going to go for it or is he going to sell up. At the minute hes on page 1 talking about alleged interest, budget cuts etc

Then we have "Pagey" on page 106 of the book talking about adding "quality" to the squad. Adding this "quality" will be interesting to see with the budget cuts that smurf has threatened to impose.

Adding to that the fact that Pages record of sourcing "quality" isnt exactly great....for every promising player hes either signed (Purkiss) or given a chance too (Andoh), there are numerous Theo Robinsons that he has signed.

If as Smurf suggests the budget is based on ST sales & we have only sold just under 500 so far then we will struggle to have a budget at all.

In reality smurf has no buyer so whether he likes it or not his hand will be going into his pocket to provide a budget because if he doesnt then theres only one way it will end....if we are losing £80k a month, in the end that will be his undoing unless he civers it by providing a budget that will help us challenge for the championship & the bigger tv money & gates that will make us more attractive to buy.
