Adams walks..

This legends talk is all about opinions. I feel that these thoughts are best kept in one's own mind. I for one have some wonderful memories of a plethora of players and characters. I wouldn't list them on here because someone would disagree and decry a number of them. So I will simply leave them in my memories for me to treasure.

Completely agree - the only one I will own up to and mention is my namesake which says something about my age!

Adams is no legend, end of! He has my heartfelt thanks for what he did for us but some of his decisions, some of his actions, some of his comments and some of his team selections were downright bizarre, not unlike our current manager.

That said, he did the honourable thing in resigning when he did and, as I said at the time, many thanks for the good times.

You are talking "Legends" not players you can remember

Adams certainly did more for the club than Bob Hazel as an example of others mentioned.

I'd say Hazel was a cult hero and Adams a legend. You only have to judge by the fact he achieved something only four other people in our history have done.

Most things are about opinion generally in football but the stats back Adams superb achievements up.

Even if people hadn't seen Andy Jones, Robbie Earle and Roy Sproson and the rest of the FA Cup semi final team their stats and historical evidence backs up their legendary status. Others possibly without seeing them i'm not so sure.

Thats not the criteria for a legend.

a collection of stories about an admirable person. a person who is the center of such stories:.... I wouldnt consider adams admirable.

If I can touch my right elbow with my right hand would that make me a legend?... or would it simply mean my right arm was broken or my right hand dismembered?

It takes time, history and affection to become a legend not just the perception of achievement.... legends dont die because someone achieves more.... they live in your heart not in statistics.

just my opinion

What a sorry end for a bloke we owe a great deal of gratitude. Why on earth any Vale fan would wish to berate Adams is beyond me.

Personally I was not sorry to see him leave the Vale as (to quote the man himself) he had reached his sell by date and his player signings and tactics had become highly questionable. However, I am and always shall be admiring of what he achieved for us during both spells he was in charge.

When he first came to Vale Park we were heading in the same direction as Stockport County, ie, not just the Conference but into oblivion. With VERY limited resources he stopped the rot on the pitch and thus bought time to survive the Bratt & Co. era (even though they tried their best to destroy any positive achievements during Adams' time at Sheffield). When he returned we enjoyed another revival and, I believe, he became the first manager to gain promotion twice with teams in administration which is an amazing feat. For these achievements he should always be respected and welcomed at Vale Park.

During our first season back in L1 something obviously changed and looking back it seems that things deteriorated as the season progressed. I've a feeling Adams and Norman just didn't hit it off and my guess is it was Adams more than Norm but that's pure speculation. I always felt Adams was a bit petchulent and his regular 'dummy out' sulks drove me crackers so it must have been a real pain to work with him.

His real problem is he's been outdated tactically and doesn't seem able to move on. He puts far too much emphasis on fitness and work rate which I think are givens these days, all teams have to have those qualities or they're guaranteed to fail and the overwhelming majority do have them. Basically this is why I think his managerial career is declining and may even be at an end.

However much you wouldn't want him back at the Vale or are glad he left at least have some gratitude and respect for one of the few managers to bring us some success.

Very good post. Micky Adams brought back the good times to the Vale for one memorable season. I'll always remember him for doing that .

He ran a tight ship also, and kept his players in peak condition throughout the season. On a personal note, I met him a couple of times and was a gentleman, stopping to chat for some time , and he came across as a very friendly man. Ok, his interviews were somewhat caustic at times, but he was honest in the end to admit that his time was up. I don't understand why he is getting lambasted on here. Good luck to you Micky.

I very much admire what he did. I'd hope all fans would given surely we all want success for Vale.

Depends on your definition, the actual definition is as follows;

A legend (Latin, legenda, "things to be read") is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and listeners to take place within human history and to possess certain qualities that give the tale verisimilitude.
