Seriously, he is better than MA

Seriously, you can't be serious?

Managerial records;

Terry Butcher 559 games 35.6% win rate

Micky Adams 747 games 38.02% win rate

Doesn't seem a massive gap but over that many games it's significant.

Also, Terry Butcher has one promotion with Inverness whereas Micky has four promotions with four different English league clubs.

No contest and no way do we want excellent former player but mediocre manager Terry Butcher at the Vale!

I noticed the other day that Butcher had gone from not even being in the reckoning to third favourite with that bookies, so I assumed from that he's applied for the job.

I can't stand him, as he's an utter gobshyyte - he used to have a column in the Sunday Mirror where he did nothing but slag off England players and managers, making out that he was much better. A p1ss-poor manager.

A little bit disrespectful of a player that played for England 77 times over a 10 period. He is probably qualified to comment on England players as he was in the Italy 90 team that reached the Semi-finals of the World Cup. A far greater achievement than the recent clutch of over paid prima-donas that have represented England.

When we look at the candidates that people seem to prefer - an untried manager in Page, who has deputised for Adams in the recent past when Adams was ill, and not a very successful stint either.

And Neil Aspin. To use your parlance of descriptive style, can be described as, having an undistinguished playing career at lower level and a managerial career similar to one the of Lee Sinnott before his move to the Vale (in other words, plying his trade in the lowest rank of the professional game).

Imagine the scenario; Premier League managers answering a phone call from Neil WHO??? or Rob Never heard of ya Page??? asking " Can I loan some of your talent?"

or

'Hello, Terry Butcher here England legend.'

At 14-1 Butcher is hardly likely to get the job, but, before casting stones at a potential candidate, have a long hard look at the front runners. Hardly exciting are they??

Doesn't take very much money for odds to shorten in this sort of market.

Bookies assume that someone in the know has put some money on.

Stoke went down the road of appointing ex-England internationals in the mid to late 80s. Didn't do them any good.

It's Page's job anyway as long as he doesn't lose every game between now and the end of the month.

Scouting together, bringing players in, talking of youth - Smurthwaite doesn't have to go through the hassle of appointing someone new with all the risks and potential personality clashes, Page will be the cheapest option and so will his recruitment policy that's now been instilled into him.

Page is desperate for a crack at management and Smurthwaite has wasted no time in drilling into him that there is no money to spend so if you want the job, go along with this new regime. Page want's to prove himself and Smurthwaite can have far more control now that Adams isn't here.

Smurthwaite will be praying that the lads continue to show desire for the rest of the month because lets face it that's all that's changed and that may fade quickly. But then this would probably be the case whoever came in because Adams didn't start on such a bad consecutive run for the first time in 5 years on his own.

To be honest I have been impressed by Page so far.
