Phil's New Book

Phil Sherwin has a great new book out in the shop today - "Men of Steele". It's the story of Vale's wonderful 1953-54 season when the club became only the second Third Division team in history to reach the semi-final of the FA Cup, only to be robbed blind by a dodgy referee in the match at Villa Park against West Brom. Vale also won the Div 3 North title by 11 points thanks in no small part to their "Steele Curtain" defence.

The book is a great read and contains not only details of all the matches and players but also wonderful snippets of the social history of the time and various anecodates from the people involved at the club.

Makes sense to buy this for Christmas! £9.99 in the club shop now. And no, I'm not on commission.

Being pedantic, the first 3rd North club to reach the semis, Millwall who reached the semis in the 30s were in the 3rd South. I will buy to celebrate the upcoming 60th anniversary, and refresh my memories.

I might have ordered it on the Vale Shop website but they want to charge me VAT and $14.99 for delivery.

I guess Smurf has more important matters to attend to than my email.

Oh dear.

Books are zero rated for VAT. The delivery charge should carry VAT at the same rate as the goods being delivered. ie Books, milk and newspapers for example have zero rated delivery. Adult shirts, scarves etc will be standard rated.

You are an export customer anyway , unless you wanted delivered in the UK but its still zero rated.

To be fair to them, they weren't charging VAT on the book. But if I order the book they still charge 14.99 to mail it. That is ridiculous because "printed matter" is way cheaper.

So if I add an item of clothing (the striped training top is STILL out of stock) like a sweat top, they charge 20% VAT which I am not willing to pay.

I've given up. A kind OVFer offered to send me one and settle up on my next visit. That was extremely helpful, thank you!

I'll get the lad PVFC1 to get me one. He might want to send it to me as my Christmas present. :)
