Is Staying Up Good Enough

Tiny p

Recommended Posts

There is a difference between what the target should be and what represents success.

The target should always be to finish as high as possible and to be promoted. All teams have that target.

Success is a relative measure though, driven by context and circumstance. In our case, and in this season, success would be a finish of 20th or higher.

Yes, staying up is good enough.

We've had a decent run of form (10 points out of the last 15 available) but this side is still very much a work in progress and there's every chance we could hit a lean spell in the middle of the winter.

As long as we're a League One club next season I'm not particularly bothered about what position we finish in. What's more important is that the right things are put in place to develop the club long term, both on and off the pitch.

What, like the season we went up alongside wolves and sheff utd beating teams like Bolton, Preston etc along the way?

But those teams didn't have the financial strength they do now.

Other teams in our league that season included Bristol City, Swansea, Cardiff, Reading, Blackpool and Huddersfield who all arguably had bigger histories but not necessarily budgets than us back then.

The invention of the Premier League and Championship has certainly created a player and wages gulf to some extent.

There are a lot that have bigger budgets than us now.

In the interests of balance there were also teams in there like Chester and Aldershot who are now non-league.

It should be good enough seen as we've just come up.

I reckon a mid table finish and novelty of league 1 wearing off we may see gates a little less next season though.

I just hope we can see a bit more progression next season or we may go stale like our last stint here.

Winning in league 2 actually did us a favour in some ways.

Ye but in them days you didnt have money thrown at teams like Crawley, Brentford, Peterborough, Bristol City and compare it to the last time we were in this league the standard is much greater imo.

It's a far better standard, I would compare the standard to the season we were relegated from the championship as to what league 1 is now, there is always a small team who makes it into the championship though, Scunthorpe, Yeovil etc
