MPS pay rise

In my experience stretching back 32 years so far, can I say that many of the politicians I have met, mostly Councillors I admit, are workaholics. The public perception that is portrayed of these people living a luxury lifestyle in public office in the UK is mostly completely ill founded. Of course I also accept that a lot went wrong over a quite a period of time with the way MPs are paid and how they claim expenses.

So to the independent review which has ruled and probably given the correct answer. But it has given the correct answer at the wrong time because it has not taken in to account the environment in society and the economy. And so I expect the political leaders to take action to moderate the findings and bring them back in to line for now with the expectations of most of the public - an increase in line with other public workers.

I think the image of MPs running the country is a false on... they make the decisions that produce the rules that run the country... the rules are implemented by others and policed by others... the proposals to change the rules are usually drafted by others... the ideas that produce the new rules are usually produced by others.

There has been wage inflation beyond that which is acceptable in top positions at public sector bodies. But can I say that being chief executive of a local authority is one of the hardest and most stressful jobs that can be found. I know that from talking to them and auditing the performance of local authorities for over 30 years. It is like being chief executive of a reasonably large company but add politics with large numbers of councillors and statutory responsibility for any service failure that arises.

I think they're underpaid personally. Given the average wage for a chief exec of a local council is £125k. I also know lots of people in the private sector who have no where near the level of responsibility of an MP yet earn quite a bit more.

The PM is only on £150k isn't he? For "running the country" that really is chicken feed!

Tony Blair didn't do too bad out of it, how many properties, how much personal wealth, champagne socialists............the worst of the lot

Many politicians (especially the high profile ones) make far more money from other positions (often after they have finished with politics) though often those positions come as a result of their job in politics. I don't think the wages of an mp are vulgar when compared to similar status jobs in the private sector, though if we are all 'in it together' then the timing is bad as many public sector jobs are paid that well, especially low down the ladder. It isn't in their powers to give rises or not though which is correct, and and so if we want it to be fair like that we have to accept it either way. It does give us a easy bullet to fire at them though!

The average MP salary is less than what my wife earns - she doesn't make half as many important decisions that affect so many people.

MPs should be paid far more in order to stop them taking second jobs - this is where the real money and corruption is. I'd also withdraw all expenses. Then they can get whatever house they want.

Funny how this "pay for the best people"only applies at the top.

The 'lower' down you go the more people there arew able to do the job so supply outstrips demand

They knew what the score was before they applied.

Indeed and you could apply that logic to anyone complaining about their wages..they knew the rate when they signed up

Funny how everyone else's pay bodies e.g. Filth and Nurses Armed Forces never come up with figures like this!

Possibly cos in the case of nurses they get automatic pay rises every year on top of any negotiated pay rise and as for the armed forces and police..they knew what the score was before they applied.

MPs salaries are much too low and have ben falling behind for many years hence the review is coming up with such a 'large' increase, but now is not the time for increases
