The rise of UKIP reveals that the three main parties are failing to represent the views of the electorate and people are desperately searching for someone to act on their behalf.

It could have started when labour went "new"... the feelings of the working class went from "them" and "us" to "them", "not quite them but certainly not us" and "us"

For me it started when the Labour party became stuffed with career politicians more interested in themselves than those they were supposed to be fighting for, politics and micro management of society became their priorities.

I have such admiration for so many Labour politicians of the past who were principled and even though misguided tried to do what they thought was right..did we see the disappearance of such politicians in a Labour govt with the loss of Foot, Smith, Healey, Benn

Regardless of which party is in charge the welfare state has been stretched so far that it as snapped. One politician gets it:Angela Merkel,Germany’s chancellor, likes to remind us that the EU accounts for 7pc of the world’s population,25pc of its GDP but 50pc of its social spending.Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s long-standing leader, made headlines when he compared Western welfare states with an all-you-can-eat buffet,he was exaggerating,of course but his determination to craft a more viable social assistance system is now inspiring many other countries.

I am fairly familiar with Singapore what with my brother's wife's family being Singaporean and involved in govt there for decades and having been there several times. My brother lived there for 8 years in higher education until 1996 and so saw the place works first hand

Lee Kuan Yew gets away with it due to a passive oppressed population. Not oppressed in terms of being locked up and It's not a North Korea but there is lack of political freedom, adoration of him, govt/state control of the media (mucho censorship for example) etc etc. They also have a massive population of workers form the likes of Malaysia/Phillipinnes who are treated appallingly in comparison to the native Singaporean workers..it's human right record whilst nowhere near those at the worst end of the scale is not great.

It is in all but name a one party state..only the People's Action Party has ever run the govt for example and there is a cosy relationship between the govt and the courts.

You can get away with things in such a state that quite rightly you cannot get away with in the UK..including such an attitude to welfare so I personally take what Lee Kuan Yew says with a large pinch of salt..it's what he and his govt want, not necessarily what Sigaporeans want

Although I also believe that the welfare state has become too big and tries to deliver too much and needs serious reform but we should be proud of it and let our people decide what it does and does not deliver

Do we have to keep dragging this ******** up?

I don't see the supporters of other (non-racist) parties banging on all the time. It's playing politics for the easily led

I've dragged this ******** up because it's national news and thought some people might be interested?

I hope the (non-racist) parties you mention don't include the ones running Rotherham Council?

I see you've chosen an example involving Asian/ Muslims and ignoring the hundreds of high profile white cases. How blissfully ironic

well we know now what the rotherham socialists stand for and have done for many years and those at the top of the pile with one exception all believe that they've done nothing wrong, a disgusting and shameful episode that the chief executive has already got the buckets of whitewash ready to obliterate.
