Be interesting to see how the Darren Purse/Liam Chilvers/A N other shapes up in the second half of the season as we shipped far too many goals for a promotion chasing outfit

i agree, good job we scored so many [ the wingers contributed to this greatly]

i was hinting for months about our handling of balls in our own 18 yard box, especially in the air, purse looks like he may have answered that, i hope

Only 14 teams outside of the premier league have a better defensive record than us.

Thats said we have conceded 30 goals in 27 games.

Swindon conceded 32 all season when they won the league.

Notts county conceded 31 when they won it.

If we can keep it to roughly one a game and finish the season around 50 conceded i will be very happy.

How many goals did Swindon score though ST? I suspect we are on course to comfortably surpass them in that.

The lad is only 27!!! He's in the prime years of his career... He's not 30 something... £1m is easily achievable... Do you think Man U said that about Van Persie??? I think not... 26-31 are suggestively a players prime years!

Van Persie has scored goals regularly at the top level for a number of years and therefore you pay for pretty much guaranteed success. This is Popes first ever season of scoring frequently and as any move would be a jump up in leagues (presumably)it is far from a guaranteed success.

Therefore it is not really comparable and when you factor in contract length then 1m beccomes even more unlikely.

I hope nobody is tempted to offer silly money, I would prefer him to stay at the Vale. But clubs do offer silly money, £1M is not a lot to a club hoping to get into the Prem or having parachute money to spend. Another good season with the Vale would certainly enhance his value, then we will be saying build a championship team around him.

100 goals scored, 50 against... That would be amazing!!! Pope has been sensational. His work rate, passion and nouse to be in the right place at the right time, has served him well this season. And as has already been mentioned, his aerial ability is 2nd to none in the lower leagues. How many headers has he scored???

On doing a quick count (relying on a mediocre memory and a few match reports!) I made it 10 headers out of his 24 league goals so far (42%) Both his cup goals, at Walsall & Sheff Utd, were shots. However, I do stand to be corrected by anyone with a better memory than mine (not hard to come by!!!)

There's some very old fashioned views on wing play on here.

Both AV and JMW have made a terrific team and individual contribution this season whether they come inside or go outside full backs. Further, whilst AV and JMW are occupying two players, it allows our full backs to push on and whip crosses in. Yates cross at Gillingham and Taylors cross against Plymouth for Pope headers are prime examples of this.

I too hope we dont get any offers.

I have been thinking of previous occassions where a championship club have paid 1m+ for a striker in league 2 but cant recall any. There is Ricky Lambert ofcourse but he was playing in league 1 and scoring regularly for several sessons before his 1m switch to Soton.

That doesnt mean it wont happen though because football is a crazy business financially although less so outside the recession proof premiership!
