You might want to have a look For The Big Match revisited on Sunday mornings at 07:40 on ITV4. Proper football pitches with Ice/snow/water and all sorts on it and they still played - This sunday its Sheff Wed v Arsenal in the FA cup Jaqnuary 1979 only 2 other matches were played according to the write up - be interesting to see what the conditions are like and compare with today's pansies.

Who were we playing eons ago....well snowy pitch and when they came out for second half their keeper got absolutely pelted with snowballs from Vale fans on the Hamil End who had spent all half time preparing stocks of them. Keeper retreated to half way line and refused to go back until they stopped.......conner remember except it was years ago...70's?

Hartlepool I think, the funny thing about that night was the referee who was allowed to walk right up into the penalty area by those behind the goal and as soon as he was in range he got pelted.

The keeper never settled as all through the second half random snow balls landed all around him

You're right.....didn't it finish up 5 - 0 and the keeper spent more time looking over his shoulder nervously? I remember the Ref bit too and the announcer saying "Will you please stop throwing snowballs so the game may continue"....brilliant! I remember Chester at home on a snow covered pitch as well I think it was....first time they used orange balls and they brush dthe snow off the lines and put blue dye on them.

I was there a few years ago when we lost 5-2 to Hartlepool and it started snowing at half time. We hoped the game would be abandoned as a result, but no such luck.

Yep Hartlepool. We won 3-0

It was in the days when at half-time the fans in the Bycars used to walk around the running track to stand on the open Hamil end. On that particular night the Hamil was shut because of snow on the terraces.

When their goalie came back for the second half he got to about the edge of the area and got a full barrage. Refused to come any nearer so was greeted by "C'mom Goalie"!

Ha.. good night..
