Jordan Gibson would be a good option for us I would say, winger.

I would have thought we'd probably have looked at Jack Nolan at Morecambe.  Apart from his disasters at Gillingham he's a good record for goals, predominantly from the left wing. Surprising he signed for Morecambe BUT it was only for the season. Would be a surprise if he didn't get an EFL club. Can also play centrally as a forward or in midfield.

Nolan is a strange one really, like you say has a good record yet clubs didn't take a chance on him and he ended up playing in the PFA team during the summer until Morecambe took him on and i think he is only 24 as well so plenty of time but it makes you wonder if there are under lying issues with him

It’s easy for us fans to slag a player off, but there can be factors outside football affecting them! We don’t know everything!

He was under contract with Gillingham until September. He didn't want to stay (nobody who has been to Gillingham does!) and I think they wanted to sell rather than release. In the end Gillingham agreed to allow him to move to Morecambe for a season and released him from his contract. I think he settled in the North West and it was a commuting issue at Gillingham.

I would sign Nathan Lowe permanently in a heartbeat if he would come to Vale. It would be a coup but at Lge 2 level and above he has scored goals, he'd cost a large fee but would be worth the risk. I doubt Stoke will look to him next season to solve their goal scoring issues so they could be persuaded to sell rather than loan.

On a similar theme Tezgel on loan at Crewe from that lot down the road has banged in 15 I think and spent a while out injured.

Just out of curiosity would you prefer us to:

a- sign another player of Tolaj's ilk and lose them again after a season for £1.2m
b- sign a player similar ilk to Matty Taylor, Mark Cullen or AJ Leitch Smith and them go after 1/2 years

Whilst it isn't an either or situation adding reasonable release clauses like Tolaj's certainly makes it easier to sign nation league upstart who are in demand. I purposely chose the 3 strikers for the comparison as they were players with a reasonable level of experience and past success who you could argue did or didn't work out for us.

Also was Paton's minimum release clause set too low?

Both

Personally I don't want to see a hatful of renewals. It's a big mistake to think players are automatically going to be up to standard in the league below. A completely fresh strike force required for starters, and that's no offence to Stockley, but we need to get out of the mindset of 'he played some decent games a couple of years ago', we need to evolve.

Looks like 5 at the back could be retained though, which most fans I know abhor.

Arguably Tolaj had a weaker negotiating position as the other three had done well in the EFL at some point, so I would say the three other players had more bargaining power, which addresses the myth from some others that he was calling the shots.

Of those three lads AJ was the only one who was any good in my view anyway.

Obviously the Tolaj scenario is best, in fact despite his short time with us, he actually played more games than the other three. Also only AJ was any good, the other two we didn’t really want to keep based on what we were seen, so were willingly released. Not so Tolaj.

The other problem is, while I agree with you, the odds of us finding another Tolaj soon is highly unlikely. I’d say he is a once in a decade player.

Some clubs seem to find a conveyor belt of talent.  Brentford, Southampton,Brighton and a few others. These punch well above there weight.

But two seasons ago (or 4 or 5) is like it was yesterday if you listen to some.

Garrity's injury proneness will disappear, Stockley will score 20 if we get some wingers, our defence will be great, Byers will be immense... apparently, if you believe some of the things people get carried away with.

I think we'll keep some, drop some, bring some in. It's evolution not revolution we need.

They have a financial position to keep the talent, at least from all but the strongest premier league clubs. The problem we have is that with the Tolaj situation we showed we couldn’t even make an average league 1 team worth turning down.

If we had been able to have kept all the talent we had seen come through the club over the past 5 years, we would be now a Championship club.

I think with football these days thanks to Bosman, it isn’t who you sign that really matters, it’s who you can keep hold of.

Byers had his 50th appearance for us at Stockport. In the same time frame of 2 seasons, James Wilson had over 60. Which tells you all you need to know about his injury record!
