Vale 0 - Gillingham 2 Post Match Comments

The most disappointing thing is that Rotherham looked a better team from an attacking point of view but we really took it to them. Only one team wanted to play football today and Gillingham just wanted to stifle, get away with fouls and nick the odd goal. They were flattered by two which were as poorly defended as you'll see. Referee didnt let the game flow which played into their hands. If we'd nicked one early in the second half I think it might have been different. So frustrating!

Thought Gillingham won the tactical battle today assisted by a weak referee.

We didn't look great but their pace did enough up top to cause us problems. They then proceeded to take their chances then get men behind the ball to basically prevent the wingers stretching their legs leaving Morsy and Shuker to be their usual non creative selves. If teams can start to contain Williams and Vincent we need Burge or Loft in centre mid to create something from that department.

However Pope was the main issue today, he was being pushed, pulled, fouled, clipped all over and rarely did the ref doing anything about it, a few more set pieces here and there and we may have gotten back into the game. Also since when was karate allowed in football? Would like to see it properly but how did their player stay on the pitch when he booted Neal, late and high I though.

It's not the end of the world though, I think a tweak is needed in midfield with Burge for Shuker in my opinion, but otherwise I'm sure we'll be back at it next week.

See this is what's wrong with vale fans!! Do you think Adams is sat in there telling the players it's ok we lost as they are a good side and we did ok for a few weeks?

Calm down, Matt. We lost today to a side who took advantage of the weakness we've had in the team since the first day of the season - lack of pace in the centre of the defence. This was going to happen at some point and because we do not have the wherewithall to change it until we get a buyer. As soon as we do, it's an area that needs addressing. Most teams in this leage will not have the players capable of exploiting this - as has been shown already. Getting upset about this when there is bugger all we can do about it at the moment is pointless. There has been far more good than bad this season so far so I'm not going to get wound up by one bad result.

By the way - did anyone notice the lack of a time/subs board today? We'll get fined for that.

The timer on the scoreboard was going mental as well!!

The ref was awful. Their player should have walked for a fly kick on Neal and we had a decent shout for a penalty and numerous free kicks turned down. Absolutely awful. No consistency in his decisions at all. Pope got man handled everytime the ball came over and got **** all yet as soon as he gives it back the ref gives them a free kick.

Can't complain too much about the result. They did their Homework and came with a plan. And we're a horrible niggly team. McDonald was shocking. Really shocking. And the ref was awful. It took him 86 minutes to give a foul on pope. And their player hit Neal in the thigh with his studs up and should have walked, no question. We had chances in the second half, but it was one of those days when we were never going to score.
