Port Vale v Newport Co match thread - 18th Jan

Featured Replies

Just back, traffic horrendous round Smallthorne for some reason.

Well, were did that 2nd half come from??

Much better from Vale….players driving forward with aggression and purpose.

Complete contrast to the 1st half which was whilst really poor quality-wise still had plenty of chances.

The one thing that struck me from that 1st half, is that when opposition teams come and pass it around at the back it’s done with the aim of moving forward and one touch.

We move if backwards and sideways without any real idea of where it’s going to end up.

Whatever the reason for this, we stopped doing it 2nd half which I presume was due to the introduction of Harper, who certainly shored up the midfield (despite a couple of loose passes), and Stockley who gave a physicality up front. And Sang also had a very good cameo.

Credit to them for coming & having a go, they had a couple of decent, pacy, direct players and their goalie pulled off one of the best saves I think I’ve seen from that header 2nd half. I was worried when they brought on their 6’9” Kevin Francis-style CF but he literally never had a kick.

Final word to the ref, who gave a “it’s all about me” type performance, with some incredibly soft free kicks. I cannot for the life of me fathom out what he didn’t see when Hackford broke clear, deliberate handball clear as day from the Hamil, and definite red. It also looked like the one he gave was an after-thought after their guy chopped down Tolaj once he realised he was already on a yellow.

On balance, entertaining game, great last 30 mins, but we do not look a top 3 side I’m afraid to say.

The first half was filled with mistakes, little effort, and mass confusion as to who should be where.

It was utterly dreadful.
And let’s not make out as the 2nd half was superb. We have played one of the most dreadful teams in league football today and scraped over the line.

With the budget we have and the players we have, Darren Moore has decided to make this season look like we’re walking through treacle.

The decent teams will destroy us in the upcoming months unless the clown in charge of this football club either <ovf censored> off or stops putting names in a hat for his team selection.

Even if we do go up Darren Moore can do one.
I now understand why he wasn’t loved by fans of his other clubs.

The team selections are now beyond a joke. Too much thought going into the opposition. Way too much.
Just put your best 11 out and go and win the game. It’s not rocket science.

Beating Newport 3-2, having been behind twice, at home, isn’t the springboard for success.

I fully expected this afternoon to be a walk in the park. They were utterly dreadful. We were marginally better.

7 points from 9. In third. Garrity and Clark fit, Byers hopefully next week.

Let’s just enjoy it for now mate. I think every fan has a bit of doubt with Moore but if we can’t have a nice Saturday night now then I fear it’ll never happen.

Yeah credit to Harper. Wasn’t asking much to outperform Lowe but definitely toughened up the midfield and gave us a lot more aggression.

I think it’s pretty hilarious no matter how he win, whether it’s convincingly, coming from behind or a game we didn’t even deserve to there will always be the same few numptys on here who can’t enjoy it! We’ve started the year with a bang… 2 wins & 1 draw. Onwards & upwards 👍🏻

Have to agree with much of what you say, Joe. I get exasperated with some fans who moan all the time. We even had one bloke passing judgment on the game on Radio Stoke saying how we were rubbish until Henegan came on!!!
Two of the three players whom loads are moaning should never have been picked played in the win at Donny and did well!!

Moore made only two changes, one of them certainly forced on him.

I heard that on the way home. I can't believe some of our fans criticise our players but they have no idea who some of them are!

Disgusting performance.

It looks like a rag bag formation with players who don’t know what they are supposed to do.

It’s all on the fraud of a manager this.

I will say this now…. Darren Moore is a dead man walking in the fans eyes. Pretty much like Ten Haag was at Man Utd.
Theres not a prayer that he will last 5 months never mind 5 years. I don’t want him here 5 more weeks or even 5 more days. 5 hours is a bit of a stretch.

Carol… With all due respect, you are absolutely clueless to give your money to this fraud.

GET HIM GONE TONIGHT.

I saw your post after Morecambe, my you've changed.

There’s a player in there 100% just needs a run of games which will be difficult once Byers returns. He’s a quality option to be bringing off the bench for me

Fundamentally people got overexcited either by our summer business or the winning run and have reached a point of expectation where they can’t just enjoy a 4th tier win for its own merits.

It’s got to be dominant, with minimal mistakes and consistent attacking threat. Anything to the contrary and it’s boos and criticism.

I’ve had and continue to have some serious worries with Moore but sometimes you just have to be enjoy the wins and being in the top 3 when it arrives.

Disagree. Hackford had two great chances, and did Garrity. Think Headley had one cutting in which was saved.

Set-pieces were a shambles. We weren’t at our best. But I don’t think you create that many chances and can be labelled dreadful and get relentlessly booed by morons.

You can create chances and still be poor, which is what we were in the first 45. They're a really poor side. We should have it in us to beat them by 3 or 4 at home, if the right players and formation are selected.

Made me smile that Hudlin one. Remember the amount of times people would suggest him during various transfer windows as he’s big. Unfortunately for him he’s just a less talented Uche. Definitely dodged a bullet not taking on that one.

We were our own worst enemies.

The first goal from my seat was a Debrah 50p head from Hart straight in the air, Amos was like a rabbit in the headlights. Awful Awful goal. Comical.

2nd again a daft challenge by Hart to concede the free kick, possibly harsh but ref gave it  and then a no challenge from Hart for the goal vainly claiming his weakness was a foul.

But attacking wise we created umpteen chances so that's a positive.

One thing is as clear as daylight, Lowe can't start home games. I don't particularly want him starting away games but that's more understandable. Playing him at home is mind boggling.
