Odd news

A news item popped up on my tablet last night......

Two men have been convivted of public order offences in London whilst protesting.

Disorderly conduct, I believe was the charge....... basically a catch all if they can't get you for something else and they want to get you..... that isn't the part that's odd.

Apparently they were eating squirrels in front of a vegan stall..... causing harassment,  alarm or distress.

I didn't realise it was against the law to eat squirrel, I don't advise it, it didn't do Elvis any good..... I didn't think it was against the law to eat meat in the street or anything else for that matter, not even the vegan food being sold.

So we come to the harassment,  alarm and distress..... is it harassing, alarming or distressing to eat KFC, a burger, a hot dog, a fish or anything else in public?.... who would be harassed,  alarmed or distressed by it?

I don't recommend squirrel as a food, small quantity of meat, to many bones and once the skin is stripped? Not much left..... and it doesn't taste of much..... a bit like rat or snake or most insects..... if you don't add flavour there isn't much there.

Was it about hurt feelings? Or about the police beeing seen to do something even if there is nothing to do?..... I doubt less than two police officers were involved, probably more.... knife crime statistics are harassing,  alarming and distressing.... but we need to get our priorities right..... conviction rates need to go up, confidence in the police needs to be restored and people don't need their feelings hurt.

Sounds 'Nuts' to me...

Seriously though, and mildly related to 'harassment,  alarm and distress', we live approximately 1 kilometer from a major shopping complex which includes locally owned eateries and all the major franchises e.g. McDonalds. KFC - several operate 24/7.

Many a morning you will find us and our neighbours picking up discarded food containers/wraps/bottles wantonly hurled from vehicles.

The City Council does its best to keep the parks and public places tidy. But we would not expect our already stretched police services distracted to monitor 'Litter Patrol'.

p.s. hopefully the squirrels eaten weren't from MI5 😮

:rollonthefloor: they only go for the moles mate.

On a serious note..... perhaps a levy should be charged, for every piece of litter picked up off the premises, against the premises owner..... making sure of course that every disposable is clearly marked... 1c per item would rack up quite a nice extra revenue.

Dumped crap is a problem here..... from building rubble to domestic waste just tipped onto someone's land.

Good idea to impost store owners for returned rubbish, but you can bet a brick to the Angel of Burslem that he 'Corporate moles 😀' will somehow shanghai OHS&W to put the knockers on it.

There is an article on the court case in the Evening Standard, eating a raw squirrel in a Soho street food market by ripping it open and eating the innards would make most people spew up. The same person has also eaten a raw pigs head in Brighton. Part of a protest movement.

They were doing it deliberately in the presence of children who were visibly upset

It wasn't so much what they were doing, but the way in which they were doing it [cue Bananarama]

It was adjudged that they were doing it to deliberately upset people and cause tensions - that's why they were fined

Fortunately for them they were only eating raw grey squirrels, if it had been red squirrels the fine would have been doubled [okay I made that last bit up]

Why are people so squeamish?..... they dont sing animals to sleep at the slaughter house.

If people choose not to eat meat that's fine..... I question the logic of not being offended by people eating chicken wings/legs, fish, burgers etc in the street but get upset by a squirrel... I used to get a snack of cockles, mussels, prawns and squid rings to eat as I walked... what's the difference?.... would people get upset with pigs trotters, or chicken feet?

I don’t see a difference....but....why get...so offended by....people choosing not to.

Id take your point one step, further. People say hey love animals whilst also taking part in an industry that tortures and harms them.

Or - and I'm a hypocrite in this respect - people refusing to eat the flesh of animals but buying and consuming produce that is a direct result of the mistreatment and deaths of animals on an industrial scale.
