Match Thread - Mansfield Town v Port Vale

Fundamentally we were beaten by a much better side. Mansfield looked comfortable on the ball and if we weren't lucky enough to have one of the best keepers in the league it would have been 3 or 4-0 today, with them also hitting the post.

We should aspire to play that sort of football, insistent on building from the back with 3 centre halves comfortable on the ball and dynamic attacking play. 1-0 really flattered us.

Ref was a bit silly with his bookings but did he change the course of the game? Not at all. Manny deserved both bookings (on an abject afternoon for him) and we could have had Collina reffing today and still would have been deservedly beaten.

Aspo didn't help matters by:

1. Subbing our best player today (Conlon) and most potentially dangerous attacker (Whitfield)

2. Bringing on Monty and Dodds but getting confused as to who plays where, playing the left winger Monty up front and the forward Dodds on the left.

If there's anything to take away from today its that we aren't a play off side, barring major investment in attacking areas in January. The defence battled well and you can't fault the players' efforts but Mansfield were comfortably the better side. Olejnik didn't have a save to make and bar 10 mins at the start and a bit of huffing and puffing when down to 10 men, we were distinctly second best.

What has Mansfield got to do with him?

That we've been comprehensively beaten, bordering on outclassed, by a team with 4,000 home fans and people deem it 'fair enough'.

Port Vale should never be satisfied with League 2 football, let alone getting rinsed by a League 2 side (however good they might be). The reason this is happening is Norm.

Dodds and Montano both come on.

Dodds left wing.

Montano up front.

Obviously

*♂️

Actually the most baffling thing Aspin has done.

Not against bringing either of them on but why play them both in awkward positions they look lost in?

Weird.

4 goals in 9 away games tells it's own story. The fact the 2 of those were penalties and 1 was a direct free-kick further highlights that our ability to create anything of note in open play away from home is rare.

It really doesn't matter if we had Harry Kane up top - he can't score if there are not chances.

I really hope Aspin wakes up and realises there are no good teams in this league do you might as well have a go at them and I'm convinced we would do no worse points wise than trying to bore everybody to death.

It's not really though is it. We have a more than competitive budget. We're a far more stable club now than under V2001 and the two administrations. People forget this. Smurf isn't perfect by any means... but demanding he goes is dangerous.

Bruno and Brown were woeful... but many supported them at the time. Aspin has done a good job... look at the progress in the space of 12 months. We can't keep throwing our toys out of the pram every time we have a defeat. That's football. Port Vale will never he Man City... chill out.

Christ, I learned a long time ago, for my sanity, to brush off a defeat.

I'm not chucking my toys out the pram over this defeat lad ahahhahahaha

I've been angry for around 3 years now. Keep up.

'Far more stable' - we were 1 point of non-league and likely extinction. As criminal as V2001 were, that never happened.

Aspin isn't the issue pal. I've brushed off today as we were beaten by the better team. The manner in which we've become a mid-table League 2 side is what angers me. And the cause of that is incompetent ownership and poor decisions for 3 years.

Get off your high horse and wake up. Imagine thinking the Hugill money disappearing and nearly getting relegated to non-league for the first time in 150 years is a sign of stability.

Also would add not demanding he goes is far more dangerous. Have you forgotten the last 2 seasons??????????

We were in non-league 100 years ago.
