According to Wiki right now (updated in the past week), we have 24 players (34 total, 6 loans in, but 4 players currently loaned out). To ignore the loans for a second (as we don't know if we're paying them or not), £38,000 each would put us at £912,000, however, there is probably at least a third of those 24 that won't be on that, & a few of those that aren't even near it. Factoring in loans & extra for the higher earners, I'd say £1.3m is probably fairly accurate.

I've seen what a fair few players at League 1/2 level are on, & if the above is near the mark, I reckon we probably have around about a mid-table budget for League 2. I think Brown wasted a fair bit of it (& spread it too thinly), but if Aspin is backed in Jan & given similar in the summer, we could be pushing for promotion next season, if not this one (providing he carries on getting it right).

However, none of this is to do with the results on Saturday! They weren't great, & it's depressing seeing the table as it is after so many good results recently, but we could open up a decent gap this Saturday if we win. In a few weeks, could be mid-table too.

I suspect £1.3m is probably about right. I also think, in fairness to Smurthwaite, it is probably fair for a club with our gates and our overheads. I have no idea who came up with the ridiculous strategy in the summer to employ so many people. It baffles me that Page, Ribeiro and Brown, who have probably played well over 1000 games in English league football between them, and under some very good managers, all thought that quantity over quality was the way to go, which leads me to think that somebody above them must have given them this strategy.

When you consider Accrington's budget is around 750K and they are 2nd in the league it puts it into perspective

It boils down to the players you bring in and how they perform!! John Coleman has got his right up against Brown who did'nt!!

15 years managing a club makes a difference, a proven manager. Cant see Brown spending a long apprenticeship in non-league. Where will Vale be after 3 years of Aspin?

1.3 million isnt bad for this level, not much difference to our last league two campaigns prior... the issue is its been used on a mass of players rather than 20 decent pros at an average of 65k per annum!

Many clubs in this league will have a smaller budget.

It seems to have been conveniently forgotten that a huge number of players had to be paid off - some of this, maybe all may well have come from the budget.

It's also rather easier (whoever is manager) to have a lower budget if you have most of your players in place, than if you start with just 3 or 4 firt-teamers left. New players have agents fees, and signing-on fees and you have to compete in a virtual auction for anyone decent.

The whole issue is far more complex than simply comparing Vale to Accrington, as we all know Vale has been so badly run in other areas (shop, catering) under Normans control until recently, that this affects it too.

It makes no odds now, just a way for some people to keep attacking a departed failed manager to deflect from the responsible person who appointed him, Bruno and got rid of Page when we were in the top half of L1.

The thread has gone way off topic for a long while too, when it was supposed to be on Saturdays results.

It’s because none of them trusted their own judgment, they needed comfort blankets of lots of players.
