Danny Guthrie, formally of Newcastle Utd & Blackburn Rovers last season, is currently playing for a non league side in the Shropshire leagues. He's due to play in Drayton this eve. Ball winning centre midfielder with a goal in him. Just what we need. Worth an approach?

 

With a goal in him,13 goals in 238 appearances?

If lack of match fitness is a perverse consequence if such a big squad as Aspo has indentified we need to reduce the squad and settle with 9 or 10 regular starters even if they aren’t quite at the level required for a few weeks. This is Aspo’s early assessment and it makes sense to me. Some fans think we don’t have time for this but I disagree, it’s only half way through October and I think there is sufficient quality but the psychology / confidence has gone off the boil. I found Aspo’s demeanour very reassuring in this respect andI think he’ll be sticking with some underperformers because it’s expedient in the interests of getting a stable 9 or 10 regular starters. I’m ambivalent about this desperate casting about for different players and trying anything approach. I don’t expect too much business in January because more change is less likely to help than a settled (even if not theoretically optimal) starting eleven.
