Bye bye Uber

Unfortunate for the 3.5 million regular users in London and the 40,000 Uber drivers who will lose their jobs.

Political gain for the mayor and his cronies while tourists continue to get ripped off.

I think they will come up with a solution and charge Uber more than others to try and balance the charges out.

TfL took the decision rather than the Mayor. Not a lot of people outside of London like the mayor, I can't quite put my finger on the reason why.

Uber is cheap because hedge funds have been investing huge amounts in them and are subsidising low fares in order to undercut the local competition. One report said that passengers only pay around 41% of the true cost of the journey.

Great news that Uber is losing its London licence. A victory for decent taxi drivers and bad news for alleged criminals. Let's hope more places quickly get rid of this scourge of the highways.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-41358640

A lot of their drivers are alleged criminals, many are alleged illegal immigrants, they allegedly lower safety standards and make journies allegedly unsafe for vulnerable people such as young girls, older people, the disabled and so on.

They are out to finish the reputable black cab and lower the profession to become a cheap dutch auction with alleged cheap sub-standard vehicles and the possibility of allegedly very dodgy criminal drivers.

Good riddance, let's hope other big cities and other places do the same.

Ultimately it was a regulatory issue around having the correct DBS checks, medical checks and so on for their drivers. They couldn't ensure the safety of their passengers so TfL withdrew their licence to operate.

I don't think the grounds for the decision are any more political than that. I expect them to come up with some sort of a solution and carry on operating.

Preposterous rubbish 3.5m use it 40000 drivers. Alleged this and alleged that. With modern satellite navigation why do you need to pass a test. There are plenty of rip off black cab drivers. I lived in London in Maida Vale for 2 years and when my Australia wife asked a black cab driver to take us home from Oxford Street he took us via Camden and Swiss Cottage. If you dont want to use it fine, but in a free society the rest of us should have the choice. John Worboys was a black cab driver with over 100 rapes to his name .... nothing as serious that I am aware of. The year before Uber operated 107 London cabbies were convicted of serious assault or sexual offences. At least with Uber there is a trail of who picked you up and when.

Once again the consumer suffers and will end up paying larger fares. It's everyone's choice who they use, i personally have used black cabs and found them to be very good but very expensive and have also used Uber and found them to be very good but cheaper. Yes there needs to be sturdy checks and all taxi firms need to follow this but I think it's more to it than just Uber not following the TFL checks, it seems strange it is just London.

Typical Socialist drivel from ************, would suggest the Socialist mayor has been bought out here. The Black cabs in London are mainly rip off merchants. My daughter lives in C London and like the majority she uses Uber, because they give good service, good cabs, good price, good reliable drivers. This is not the end of Uber.

Uber is cheaper for a reason. As an organisation they have failed to properly check their drivers and the vehicles. It is utterly reliant on technology so there is no knowledge exam and apparently insufficient safeguarding checks. Too many of the drivers are involved in criminal activity. I know that the majority would be honest people trying to earn a decent living but unfortunately for them they aligned themselves with an organisation that failed to have proper compliance, safety, governance and regulation.

Black cab drivers go through stringent Met Police checks, have to prove their knowledge, and their vehicles have to be in perfect working order. That costs a little bit more money. I would save spend an extra couple of quid and protect myself and my family.

The operation of the black cabs needs to change to bring in some of the benefits of technology that Uber have clearly demonstrated. However technology should never be allowed to over ride safeguarding, honesty, decency, knowledge and passenger safety.

Good for TFL right decision, Uber is a poisonous company based on one app and idea from a clever technie it lacks in built business ethics worldwide which has been ably demonstrated by their management team.

However TFL w warning, you need to change some practices so that the benefits of technology can be used for the benefits of passengers.

I believe there are mobile apps for black cabs now, no reason why they could not offer a similar service.

Black cab drivers undergo DBS checks as many employees do. If a criminal record is on there a business has to decide if it will adversely affect employment. Uber recently got all drivers to renew checks. Tfl admit there are black cab drivers with criminal records but refuse to disclose the number or offenses quite regularly.

In terms of safety for vehicles for black cabs must meet an official safety standard when first purchased. For relicenseing they use a 14 day old MOT certificate for vehicle safety, the same as a normal car.

All about the crazy prices for cabbies and taxi drivers sadly $$$$$$$

In the interests of fairness for those spouting about uber drivers being criminals stop throwing stones in glass houses;
