Stokie Accent

Scouser is a common guess by people when me & my friends go out of Stoke, but a lot do have trouble with guessing where we're from.

I don't have a heavy Stoke accent but somehow I do get called slightly posh now & again, which absolutely baffles me considering the way I speak haha!

Was in the States the other week. A really nice guy, Hank, complete with cowboy hat, said ".... you're from near Wolve-a-hampt-on". Not bad Hank. Not bad.

Haven't lived in S-o-T for 30+ years but still have the accent. Proud of it too. The kids have a hybrid Manc-North Staffs accent, their mother being from Oldham, even though neither have ever lived any time in the UK. Sounds really great.

A North Staffs accent (North side of S-o-T) is nothing like a Yam Yam/Brummy accent. More in common with Derbyshire. Now if you are from Fenton/Longton/Stoke... or god forbid Stone, Stafford, Burton, Uttoxeter...

I arrived in SOT 1961 from Brum but my birth place was Nottingham

My first conversation was the Steward at Longport WMC After the business conversation with my colleague. I was fascinated by this accent and asked him if he came from derbys, he was quite insulted as he was born and raised 50 yards up the road. I thought I knew accents . But this was rather humiliating

Same story with me. It's now over 32 years since I lived in Brown Lees having spent time in Wolverhampton, Lichfield and more recently Dubai. Anyone from UK (with any sense) picks up on the accent fairly quickly. Anyone from the Potteries knows immediately. Everyone else thinks I'm Australian....... I have no idea why.......

Not having d response!lived in Stoke for 45 years I don't think I have an accent as such but I'm amazed at the number of people who ask me whereabouts in Stoke I'm from after I have said a few words which usually gets followed up by some comment about the team from the dark side which in turn elicits a sharp 2 word response!

I have been asked if I'm from Liverpool, Black Country, West Country!!!! and yes also Oz!

Well living in sort of scouse land nobody thinks I'm scouse but as soon as I go elsewhere they say I've got a scouse accent. Having lived here 25 years I've probably picked up a bit of the lingo but it's quite refreshing to hear people think that if you haven't lived this way. Well refreshing for me because I certainly wouldn't want anyone to think I'm a scouser I'm proud of my heritage.

It is funny that being a Stokie you can easily recognise the accent. A woman ordered a drink off me when I was working and I couldn't resist asking her if she was from Stoke and yes she was.

I love doing the 'cost kick a bow' saying and seeing their faces !!!!

Some of my Indian colleagues say I speak 'proper' English, some of my Bristolian colleagues say I sound like I have had elocution lessons (I have) and am a bit posh sounding, in the US one thought I was Scottish and London based colleagues just say I sound northern...but then they all sound like Dany Dyer doing a mockney accen to me.

I don't think I ever had a stoke accent..not compared to some of my aunts and uncles who I often could not understand

I told him I was born in bentilee!. I was amazed he could place the stoke accent so accurratley.
